Two early Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival Group 3 races headline the Morphettville action on Saturday including the RN Irwin Stakes 2015 where two horses are battling for favouritism.
Set to run as Race 6 at 3:43pm (local), this year’s $115,000 Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) originally drew a final field of nine sprinters.
There are just eight left to do battle however following the early scratching of the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Tried And Tired who was drawn in the outside barrier.
Updated RN Irwin Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are now led by two horses with Group 1 winners Platelet ($2.50) and Magnifisio ($2.60) the ones to beat.
Darren Weir’s classy Strategic mare is a dual Group 1 champ in Adelaide and returns shooting for her third win from seven Morphettville runs (6-2-4-0).
Yet to run worse than second here, she’s drawn in gate eight for jockey Brad Rawiller and comes off a win over Gregers in a 955m Moonee Valley sprint from March 27 with 59kg.
She’ll get weight relief here dropping back to 56.5kg under the weight-for-age conditions, but that does see her meeting her biggest rival Magnifisio on equal kilos.
Perth raider Magnifisio from the WA stables of Jim Taylor has a gun barrier two draw and is first-up here.
Last time in the Magnus mare won back-to-back races at home including the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) before a second in the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) on December 6.
She is yet to race in South Australia but has trialled well at home and just needs her Perth form to stack up this weekend.
The other two single figure hopes out for the upset are then the ultra-consistent The Messina Nymph ($4.80) in barrier four coming off a black type win over the track and distance, and six-year-old Oakbank Stakes runner-up last time out Riziz ($8.50).
So do the bookies have the order of the RN Irwin Stakes odds right or is there value further down the markets?
#8 The Messina Nymph ($4.80)
Think the bookies have the top three right but for value we’re putting The Messina Nymph on top. Barrier four is an ideal draw for Tony McEvoy’s in-form Commands mare who is second-up here. Her resuming run on March 28 was over the track and distance for a win in the Listed Manihi Stakes (1100m) and think she can build on that when up in class this weekend. A Caulfield black-type winner in Melbourne, she’s got depth and should be capable of holding her own or better.
#6 Platelet ($2.50)
Platelet has an imposing Morphettville record with two wins and four seconds that she’ll add to here on the back of a first-up Moonee Valley win. Pet track, and also goes well over the distance (10-1-3-5). Second-up is also a non-issue (6-2-2-0) and drops on her weight last time out. Barrier eight is now the widest but she’ll be in the finish no worries with improving fitness on her opening run.
#7 Magnifisio ($2.60)
Group 1 Perth winner, how the WA form travels this autumn is key to this mare’s chances. Is a big danger and deserves a look-in with any trifectas, especially after the gun barrier two draw. Super sprinter in Adelaide debut, has won 12 of 23 overall and first-up record shows two wins and two seconds from six starts so can respect that.
