2015 JHB Carr Stakes Tips & Selections

The headline Sydney race for the fillies this weekend at Randwick Racecourse is the JHB Carr Stakes 2015 run over 1400m, betting tips for the set weights plus penalties showdown detailed below.

Peeping

There are 12 three-year-old fillies in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 J H B Carr Stakes (1400m), due to run as Race 3 at 1:45pm (AEST).

Markets for one of the key support races of All Aged Stakes Day at Ladbrokes.com.au have the in-form and super-consistent Peeping as the $3.70 top fancy following her nice barrier four draw.

Ron Quinton’s daughter of Redoute’s Choice is yet to finish out of the money in her six career runs that have produced a trio of wins, including the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill two back.

Her Randwick record is also good with a win and two seconds, most recently when runner-up to Miss Cover Girl in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) on a Heavy (8) on April 6.

Can she go one better this weekend when up over 1400m for the first time?

Her main dangers according to the bookies in the latest JHB Carr Stakes betting markets include fellow single-figure hopes Matilijia ($6), Supara ($7) in the outside barrier and market mover Nancy ($8) in her class test here at career start number four.

1st

#8 Matilija ($6)

She’s run third in her two latest lead-up runs but with the extra distance on Saturday over the 1400m this Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Melbourne raider can break through with a black-type win. She’s been building well this autumn following a debut in mid-February at Moonee Valley. She won that and then her next over the 1000m at MV again before a Group 3 third over 1200m at the notoriously tight circuit. Her first Sydney run was in the PJ Bell on a Heavy (8) course, which she handled well to finish just over a length third. She can improve now she’s had a poke around Sydney, any rain helps her cause, barrier eight is no probs and James McDonald is riding in ace form staying on this filly.

2nd

#3 Peeping ($3.70)

Deserving favourite and don’t expect there to be much in this. She was second in the PJ Bell one ahead of Matilija, can she extend her brilliance to the 1400m? Barrier four will help her do it and the money says she can. It’s a 12-filly field and while she might be looking for this distance, she’s going to have to produce again.

3rd

#1 Slightly Sweet ($9)

So many chances to fill third spot but going with the one drawn in gate three who is down in class, not up. The Jason Coyle-trained Charge Forward filly won the Group 3 Keith Nolan over the Kembla Grange mile then went to Group 1 company when seventh, beaten under three lengths, to Fenway in the Vinery Stud. That was over 2000m so she’ll be appreciating a drop back in distance in a race full of chances that haven’t been over further than 1200m before.
