Group racing gets underway in Sydney for All Aged Stakes Day on Saturday with the Frank Packer Plate 2015, betting tips for the three-year-olds showdown detailed below.
There are 10 hopefuls set to line-up in Randwick Race 2 at 1:10pm (AEST) in this year’s $150,000 Frank Packer Plate (2000m), the favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au of which is Hi World ($3.10).
Peter Moody’s High Chaparral colt shoots for his third win on the trot after two Heavy-track wins in Sydney leading up to this, including the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on April 6.
He’s up over more distance here but the way he finished off on a mud track there suggests he’ll be hard to hold out again, even if the course is Soft not Heavy for his latest run.
The bookies rate the main Frank Packer Plate dangers in the markets as Tulloch Stakes third placed O’Reilly gelding Merion ($3.60) drawn well in barrier three, the John O’Shea-trained Farolitos ($4.60) and Chris Waller’s fine filly Wine Tales ($6).
Do the bookmakers have it right though or is an upset on the cards to kick off the Group action?
#2 Hi World ($3.10)
Based on the gun lead-up form and that imposing 83% place rate, and 50% winning strike rate, it is hard to go past the favourite in this. Moody’s colt has thrived this autumn on rain-affected tracks and the conditions look to suit him the best again on the weekend when he steps up over 2000m for the first time. Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride and while barrier nine is wide, there are the metres to overcome that. Lead-up form is excellent, wet track specialist and only needs to handle the distance to salute for the punters.
#3 Farolitos ($4.60)
One of two in the race representing global powerhouse Godolphin, this Medaglia D’Oro colt ran second to Hi World in the Carbine on a Heavy (9) at Randwick last start, a quinella we are tipping the two to repeat here. James McDonald is off and racing on the stablemate Gouldian ($16) but Hugh Bowman is an excellent replacement. Very consistent over the eight runs so far (8-2-2-2) so is almost a guaranteed place bet in this and rain will help.
#6 Another Al ($21)
The value Each Way chance in these markets has to be the Gai Waterhouse-trained Another Al drawn a treat in gate two for jockey Blake Shinn. Well-tried with 11 career starts to date, the latest being a win over 2100m on a Soft (6) at Gosford. Admittedly that was only in Class 1 company and this is a sharp rise on that, but he is proven over the distance and really the only one here that can say that.
