2015 Champagne Stakes Betting Tips

Two Group 1 races headline the end-of-carnival action in Sydney on Saturday including the youngsters facing off in the Champagne Stakes 2015, betting tips for the set weights clash found below.

Takedown

Nine juveniles make up the field for Randwick Race 4, the $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) due to jump at 2:25pm (AEST) this All Aged Stakes Day.

All the money in this year’s Champagne Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, where you’ll also find exclusive Best Tote or SP + 20% markets for both the Group 1 Sydney races on the weekend, is on the Peter Moody-trained favourite Pasadena Girl.

This progressive daughter of Savabeel won her opening two career starts earlier in the autumn in black type company at Flemington before her lead-up to this when fourth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

She was beaten only 1.4 lengths in the Sires’ and is looking to become the ninth Champagne Stakes winner in 11 years to graduate out of that race.

The mile should suit too so she’s at a firming price in from $3.30 to $2.80.

Can she win and become not only the fourth favourite in five years to win the set weights feature but the third straight filly to beat the boys?

There are a number of genuine hopes for the upset Champagne Stakes result to watch including Sires’ Produce runner-up Odyssey Moon ($3.80), Takedown ($6) after four wins on the trot, Tarquin ($6) who ran fifth in the Sires’ Produce last time out and Gai Waterhouse’s Street Rapper ($9.50) who is on the improve also.

So who do you back and do you sack the favourite?

1st

#3 Takedown ($6)

Pasadena Girl will take some beating but at $6 Takedown is worth a shot at it. He has drawn the outside barrier (nine) but there’s time to make up for that over the mile, which Gary Moore’s Stratum gelding races over for the first time. He has won three on the trot leading up to the distance test, including the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) on March 28 at Rosehill. He won that by over a length and if he continues to improve will be hard to stop here with Kerrin McEvoy retaining the ride.

2nd

#8 Pasadena Girl ($2.80)

This filly is the deserving favourite and there are just so many form facts and stats to back her up. The fillies have won the past two editions of the Champagne Stakes and in the past half-a-decade the favourite’s strike rate is brilliant. She’ll get things her way from barrier four with Hugh Bowman staying on, and if she finishes off any better than the Sires she’ll win.

3rd

#1 The Barrister ($13)

While the Fernhill Handicap hasn’t produced a Champagne Stakes winner since 1998, if any horse can break the drought it’s Jason Warren’s progressive Star Witness colt. He won last Saturday in the wet over this track and distance by over two lengths and while Bowman jumps off, Tommy Berry as the replacement isn’t bad at all. Proven over the distance and if the track gets downgraded he could be your upset chance for the win.
