The second of the two Group races on the Morphettville race card on Saturday sees the three-year-old fillies face off in the Auraria Stakes 2015, our exclusive betting tips and preview for the set weights plus penalties clash detailed below.
Due to run as Adelaide Race 7 at 4:23pm (local), this year’s $115,000 Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) is also known as the Schweppervescence Stakes and features a full field of 18 starters.
Two from the original line-up are early scratchings with #3 Sebrella and #17 Exalted Honey coming out.
In their place the first of the four emergencies get a call-up with the Tony McEvoy-trained Monopole coming off a third in the Tasmanian Oaks from February and Alborbrown drawn a treat in gate three for apprentice jockey Sigrid Carr.
Leading the latest Auraria Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at a firm $2.60 is clear favourite Maastricht coming off a stretch of three straight third place finishes.
The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Melbourne visitor is a grey daughter of Mastercraftsman, her interstate form leading up to this imposing.
Two back she was third at Moonee Valley in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) then she was third again from another wide draw, 11 then 12, in Sydney’s Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m).
She’ll relish a better gate five draw this weekend for her first Adelaide run, her regular rider Dwayne Dunn replaced by Joe Bowditch in this $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) lead-up for May 2.
Despite the big field, just three of her rivals are also at single figures to win with McEvoy’s Laeila Stakes runner-up Into The Mist ($6), market mover Kansas Sunflower ($7) and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Laeila Stakes winner Ondina ($8).
Outside of those under $10 the markets open right up with the next best in betting being last start Sandown winner Redasun ($11) and Laeila Stakes third placed Domesday filly Cathy’s Mark ($16) both drawn out wide.
So stick with the order of the Auraria Stakes odds or tip an upset in this Schweppes Oaks Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival lead-up?
#1 Ondina ($8)
While the favourite will be hard to beat this weekend, $8 is too good not to take on Waterhouse’s daughter of Manhattan Rain who beat a number of these home in the Listed Laeila Stakes (1600m) at the track over only 200m shorter last time out. That was her Adelaide debut and she blitzed it from barrier 11 (of 15), so can do the same again here with the right run from gate eight as she looks to extend her brilliance over more distance. Blake Spriggs, who took her to the front with confidence last time out, got the job done then and stays on for this where she could look to go all-the-way again.
#4 Maastricht ($2.60)
Deserving favourite has a gun gate in barrier five and the form deserving respect. Her Adrian Knox Stakes place at Randwick during the Sydney carnival in better company was impressive and continued on her good interstate form. Connections are eyeing an Adelaide Group 1 and the Team Hawkes-trained filly only needs a bit of luck to win over further than 1400m for the first time here.
#7 Hipster Girl ($51)
$51 is a silly price for this underrated roughie who can surprise at long odds. The Jason Warren-trained filly is a maiden after nine starts and sees both the track and distance for the first time, but she’s been out over much further against much tougher competition without disgrace. In the spring at Flemington she ran a brave fourth under four lengths off Set Square in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m). Her last start fifth at Bendigo wasn’t bad and with more metres think she’ll be running on and fitter third-up.
