The bookies are having a hard time separating the top two in Frank Packer Plate 2015 betting for the opening Group race on the All Aged Stakes Day program in Sydney on Saturday.
Due to jump as Royal Randwick Race 2 at 1:10pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Johnnie Walker Frank Packer Plate (2000m) features a final field of 10 three-year-olds.
Two of those are battling for top spot in the current Frank Packer Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with Hi World ($3.10) and Merion ($3.40) shaping up as the two to beat.
Narrowly leading the markets, Peter Moody’s in-form High Chaparral colt Hi World has drawn wide in barrier nine but has the distance over the 2000m to make it up.
He shoots for his third win on the trot following two Sydney wins in the mud over 1600m on Heavy tracks, the latest being his neck win over Farolitos in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 6.
He gets a couple of weeks between runs then as he prepares to shoot for his fourth win at start number seven, Hi World likely to get another rain-affected track on Saturday with regular rider Kerrin McEvoy continuing his association with the up-and-comer.
Hot on his tail in Frank Packer Plate betting, the Michael Moroney-trained Merion is drawn better in barrier three for Saturday’s showdown with his normal jockey Steven Arnold in the saddle again.
A winner of three of his 10 starts to date the son of O’Reilly is Group 1 performed this autumn in Melbourne having crossed a credible sixth to Wandjina, running as a single figure hope in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on Saturday, in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) from March 7.
Last time out he ran in Sydney at Rosehill in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) and ran third over the same distance he’s out over this weekend behind Hauraki, a run he and Arnold will be out to improve on at Randwick.
In an open market there are two other single figure Frank Packer Plate hopefuls this autumn with Farolitos ($4.60) and the best fancied filly in the mix Wine Tales ($6) who scratched out of last weekend’s Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) due to the Heavy track.
Godolphin’s John O’Shea prepares Medaglia D’Oro colt Farolitos who only had his black type debut in the Carbine Club Stakes last time out when a close second to Hi World.
Wine Tales represents Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller, the daughter of Tale Of The Cat last seen running sixth over this track and distance on a Soft (7) in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at the start of the month.
For more value the longer priced hopes still with claims at an upset include O’Shea’s other runner Gouldian ($15) who is boosted by the services of the in-form James McDonald and Another Al ($21) for trainer Gai Waterhouse coming off a 2100m win at Gosford at the start of the month.
