Riziz Heads RN Irwin Stakes 2015 Field

Ken Sweeney’s in-form six-year-old Riziz wears the number one saddlecloth in the feature race in Adelaide this weekend taking on a top field in the 2015 RN Irwin Stakes at Morphettville Racecourse.

Due to jump at 3:43pm (local time) as Morphettville Race 6, this year’s $115,000 Group 3 Hughes Chauffeured Limousines RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) attracted just nine final acceptors.

Despite the small field the quality remains for the early weight-for-age Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival feature.

Drawn in gate six with Joe Bowditch to ride, Sweeney’s Zariz six-year-old Riziz lines up for his 33rd career start and comes off back-to-back black type seconds in South Australia.

His latest was in the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) on April 4 carrying 61kg, the drop back to 58.5kg to suit under the WFA conditions.

There are two last start winners for Riziz to face on the weekend with Darren Weir’s dual Group 1 winner at the track Platelet and the Tony McEvoy-trained The Messina Nymph.

Strategic mare Platelet won the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes – The Goodwood double here in 2013 before coming back last autumn to run second in the same two races.

The Victorian visitor comes off a second at Moonee Valley over 955m from March 27 in her resuming run and is tipped to improve second-up on the weekend returning to Morphettville where she boasts two wins and four seconds from six starts.

Weir is also represented in the RN Irwin Stakes field this year by Michelle Payne’s mount Scarlet Billows, the Street Boss mare coming off a second in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) behind Under The Louvre at Mornington on March 28.

McEvoy’s ultra-consistent Commands mare The Messina Nymph meanwhile shoots for win number four on the trot, the four-year-old’s latest turf triumph being in the Listed Manihi Classic (1100m) on March 28.

She won from barrier seven of seven with Matthew Neilson riding on 56kg that day and from gate four with the same hoop aboard this weekend she is a strong chance again.

McEvoy has also accepted for Hawkesbury-based stablemate Rifleman who has come up trumps with the inside barrier for his hoop Jason Holder.

Third-up for the season the Hussonet six-year-old comes off an Oakbank Stakes third but is het to win at either the track or distance despite a number of close calls.

A number of top gallopers resume in the RN Irwin Stakes kicking off their autumn campaigns this weekend as well including the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Melbourne stakes winner Tried And Tired with the outside barrier, Richard Jolly’s six-year-old Karacatis and the spring’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes winner in WA Magnifisio for Perth horseman Jim Taylor.

Rounding out the line-up is then Daytona Grey in barrier three for Clare Lindop and trainers Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas.
