Index Linked Tops 2015 Japan Racing Association Plate Field

Chris Waller’s recent Yarra Valley Cup winner Index Linked is out to atone for a failure at Mornington last start with a win in Saturday’s Japan Racing Association Plate 2015 on All Aged Stakes Day.

A seven-year-old European import, Dansili gelding Index Linked won back-to-back races over 2000m and 1950m respectively earlier this autumn before a disappointing 10th to Banca Mo in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) on March 28.

Now the veteran will be out to atone for that run over the mile and a half, dropping back down in distance for the $150,000 Group 3 Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) at Royal Randwick this weekend.

Back over 2000m, which he has won four of his seven starts over previously, Index Linked has the rails run from barrier one but must handle the 59kg top weight to return to the winners’ stall.

Waller has two JRA Plate hopefuls in 2015, his other runner in the autumn clash being Our Voodoo Prince drawn at the opposite end of the field in gate 10 for jockey Damien Oliver.

Fellow seven-year-old import, Our Voodoo Prince hasn’t won a race since the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield a year ago but looks set to strike again after a nice last start second to Pornichet in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 28.

Following Waller’s top weight Index Linked in the Japan Racing Association Plate field and weights on 58.5kg is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Leebaz in gate three for Tommy Berry.

Berry rode the New Zealand-bred son of Zabeel for back-to-back runs in March when Leebaz ran sixth to Cosmic Endeavour beaten three lengths in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) first-up and then third in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m).

The five-year-old galloper’s latest run was in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 6 but even with just 50.5kg he failed to make an impact running over five lengths away 11th to Kermadec on a Soft (7) track that he didn’t handle.

Also high up the weights on 57.5kg each are Snitzel six-year-old Malavio and the John O’Shea-trained Malice.

In-form Sydney hoop James McDonald rides the consistent Malice this weekend, the Teofilo four-year-old having won the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) last November before a first-up second just a neck off Excess Knowledge in the Doncaster Prelude last time out.

Other notable hopes in the line-up include the Tony McEvoy-trained Kourkam coming off a win in the Listed Albury Gold Cup (2000m) from March 27 following a Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) third and Peter & Paul Snowden’s Not A Single Doubt mare Gypsy Diamond down in class after an unplaced Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes run last weekend.
