Darren Weir’s dual Group 1 winning mare Platelet heads to South Australia once again this weekend looking for another feature win at Morphettville in the RN Irwin Stakes 2015.
One of the opening Group races of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, this year’s $115,000 Group 3 Hughes Chauffeured Limousines RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) attracted 16 nominations led by Weir’s Strategic six-year-old.
Platelet boasts two elite level wins at the track having completed the Robert Sangster Classic – The Goodwood double back in 2013 before running second in both races last year.
She came via the Irwin Stakes before tackling the Group 1s in both 2013 and 2014 finishing second in both editions firstly behind Kulgrinda and then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein 12 months ago.
This weekend Platelet contests her third Irwin Stakes in as many years and comes off a win over Gregers in a 955m sprint win at Moonee Valley on March 27.
Weir has also nominated for Scarlet Billows in the Irwin Stakes this year, the four-year-old Street Boss mare last seen running second in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) at Mornington on March 28.
After Platelet (111) the next highest-rated RN Irwin Stakes nominee this year is the visiting Jim Taylor-trained Magnifisio (110) over from WA.
Winner of the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot last November, the Magnus mare hasn’t raced since her second to Watermans Bay in the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) also run at Perth’s premier track in December.
She’s got a good first-up record (6-2-2-0) and makes her interstate debut if accepted for the Adelaide weight-for-age feature on the weekend.
Another top interstate visitor over for the challenge is the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Group 3 winning Commands mare Gregers who comes off a second to Platelet in the Moonee Valley.
Of the local hopes one of the top chances looks to be the Ken Sweeney-trained Riziz, the Zariz six-year-old having run top two in his three runs this time in.
His latest was a second to Streetcar Isabelle in the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m), an effort he’ll be out to improve on this weekend over the same distance but at his preferred Morphettville track.
Other notable Adelaide-trained hopes include Tony McEvoy’s last start black type winning mare at the track The Messina Nymph, her stablemate Rifleman who ran third in the Oakbank Stakes and Lloyd Kennewell’s three-year-old Deiheros last seen winning the Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in Queensland in January.
