Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The three-year-old staying types that weren’t quite up to the grade for an Australian Derby campaign this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival take to Randwick Racecourse on Saturday including the in-form Hi World in the Frank Packer Plate 2015.
One of six Group races on the All Aged Stakes Day program on the weekend, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Johnnie Walker Frank Packer Plate (2000m) attracted a dozen nominations.
Included in the list of hopefuls for the set weights clash is the flying Peter Moody-trained Hi World, the High Chaparral colt shooting for his third win on the trot.
A known mudlark it is a case of the wetter the better for this up-and-comer who comes off back-to-back wins on Heavy Sydney tracks including in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 6.
Moody has also nominated for his Tavistock filly Imperial Lass who is second-up for the season on the back of a third to her stablemate Hi World in a No-Maiden-Wins mile showdown at Warwick Farm from March 25.
The top-rated Frank Packer Plate nominee this year is the Michael Moroney-trained O’Reilly gelding Merion who was sixth behind Wandjina in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne on March 7 before a nice last start third over the 2000m at Rosehill behind Hauraki in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes.
The highest rated of the fillies taking on the boys is the Chris Waller-trained daughter of Tale Of The Cat Wine Tales who was scratched from the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) last Saturday due to the rain-affected track.
Her latest run was on April 6 when sixth to Candelara in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) over the same track and distance as Saturday’s ‘Plan B’.
Also coming into the Frank Packer in flying form is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Mastercraftsman filly Maastricht, the grey having run third in her past three starts.
Two back she was third in the Group 2 Alister Clark over 2040m at Moonee Valley before her Adrian Knox Stakes third last time out.
Godolphin’s private trainer John O’Shea has two entries in the race with Street Cry colt Gouldian and Carbine Club Stakes runner-up Farolitos.
