2015 Auraria Stakes Nominations Feature Fontein Ruby

Robert Smerdon’s last start Moonee Valley winner Fontein Ruby is one of a number of smart interstate raiders nominated for the Auraria Stakes 2015 at Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday.

There are two Group race features highlighting the early Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival meeting this weekend including the three-year-old fillies facing off in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m), known this year as the Schweppervescence Stakes.

Easily the highest-rated entry nearly 20 rating points clear of the next in line is Smerdon’s Melbourne-based daughter of Turffontein Fontein Ruby.

Winner of the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) – Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) double in Melbourne last October, the Group 1 performed filly failed when taking on the boys to run last (14th) in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) two back but atoned with a black type win last start.

She went to Moonee Valley and dropped down in class for the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m), which she won on way to her maiden interstate run this weekend.

Gai Waterhouse prepares the second highest rated hope among the Schweppervescence Stakes nominees, her Manhattan Rain filly Ondina shooting for back-to-back wins at the track after her victory in the Listed Laelia Stakes (1600m) here on March 28.

Also coming via a nice run in that traditional lead-up race are the lightly-raced Tony McEvoy-trained runner-up Into The Mist and third placegetter Cathy’s Mark prepared in Melbourne by Nigel Blackiston.

Along with his Redoute’s Choice filly Into The Mist who has had just the three career starts to date, local Angaston trainer McEvoy has also nominated for his daughter of High Chaparral Monopole.

While still a maiden after five starts the promising filly has form across three states and her latest was a nice third to Geegees Goldengirl in the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) at Launceston back in February.

Other headlining visitors meanwhile include Luke Oliver’s Flemington winner over the mile last Saturday Kansas Sunflower and the Team Hawkes-trained Maastricht.

A striking grey daughter of Mastercraftsman, Maastricht comes off a string of good third place autumn carnival runs including behind Chill Party in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley and her last start third to Candelara in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 6.

Other notable Auraria Stakes nominees include Laeila Stakes fourth placegetter Regal Magnus and the Phillip Stokes-trained Coachella who ran third over 1400m at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day last November.

Check out the full Schweppervescence Stakes / Auraria Stakes 2015 nominations below, the final field of a capacity 18 runners announced on Wednesday.
