Maastricht Capable of Frank Packer Plate Success

Team Hawkes have been thrilled with the class displayed and results posted by three-year-old Maastricht through her short racing career so far and are confident she is more than capable of success in Saturday’s Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick.

Finishing outside the first three only twice in her nine start career so far, Maastricht jumped from the gates well in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) on Day 1 of The Championships most recently; receiving an ideal run in transit but failing to account for the rain-soaked conditions in the final straight; placing third.

Pleased with the fortitude displayed by the Mastercraftsman filly in the less-than-ideal conditions last start, co-trainer Michael Hawkes told Racing Ahead the team is confident Maastricht is on the constant improve and revealed a tilt at the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on May 2nd may come to fruition should she perform to a high standard in the 2015 Frank Packer Plate.

“She went super last start and just didn’t hand the track at all,” Hawkes said.

“So to run the race that she ran, she’s getting back into career-best form and obviously the start before at Moonee Valley was a great run.

“She’s on the improve and she’ll run Saturday here and hopefully she runs well enough and she may end up in an Adelaide Oaks yet.”

Debuting for an easy win a minor over 1200m during the 2014 winter, Maastricht stamped her claims as one to watch over the Spring Carnival; winning a 1400m Bendigo minor first-up before placing second in each of the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) and Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m); the latter to subsequent Group 1 champion Set Square.

Running fourth in the Café Culture BM74 (1250m) first-up this time, the filly out of Cat Shmea progressed to fifth in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and third in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) most notably prior to the Adrian Knox Stakes.

12 three-year-olds were included in 2015 Frank Packer Plate nominations on Monday, with a final field and barrier draw due to be completed on Wednesday.
