Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Just nine runners appear in nominations for Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Autumn Carnival’s most exciting two-year-old prospects.
Godolphin has experienced notable success through the 2015 Autumn Carnival so-far and are offered a great chance of a maiden win at the highest level of two-year-old racing this weekend after trainer John O’Shea included Tarquin in Champagne Stakes nominations.
Posting two wins through his three competitive starts so far, Tarquin charged home to win the Yellowglen Maiden Handicap (1300m) on debut before making a successful transition to black type racing in repeating the dose in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) on March 14th.
Running on for a credible fifth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships, O’Shea is pleased with the condition of the Hard Spun colt and is confident he will perform to a high standard over a mile.
Gai Waterhouse saddled dominant two-year-old Vancouver to success in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) most notably this season and is offered another leading chance for success in the Champagne Stakes this weekend via Street Rapper.
Placing fourth in the TAB Place Multi Plate (1000m) on debut in late January, Street Rapper failed to fire when seventh in the Listed Lonhro Plate on February 14th but responded in the best way possible when taking out the Stramit Building Products Handicap (1350m) on March 5th.
Having since placed a close second in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m), all signs seem to point towards a competitive step-up is distance for the Street Boss colt this weekend.
Takedown charged from the rear of the field to beat Street Rapper last time out and will be hoping to repeat the feat on Saturday after being included in 2015 Champagne Stakes nominations.
Yet to finish outside the first three in four career starts, Takedown won the Forkbiz Maiden (1100m) on February 26th and will be aiming for a fourth-consecutive win on Saturday having also jogged home to win the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) in Canberra on March 8th.
The Barrister secured ballot-free entry into the Champagne Stakes with success in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) last weekend and has taken advantage of the ticket.
Failing to make an impact when seventh in his racing debut in late spring, The Barrister has steadily built to the task over five starts this time and has timed his run of form to perfection, having won the Mornington Sires’ Produces Stakes (1500m) a fortnight prior to the Fernhill Handicap.
Reckless Russell and Rhode Assassin have also been entered in 2015 Champagne Stakes nominations via the Fernhill Handicap, and are set to be joined in the final field by Mine Two, Odyssey Moon and Pasadena Girl on Wednesday.
