Delectation Scores Narrow 2015 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint Win

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller celebrated his first Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day win for 2015 in race five with jockey Hugh Bowman bagging a double thanks to a gutsy effort from Delectation in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint at Royal Randwick.

In a field of 10 Waller’s Shamardal gelding Delectation and Bowman, who won the day’s opening race aboard next weekend’s Champagne Stakes hopeful The Barrister, jumped from nine and hung back in the race settling beautifully in the lucrative $500,000 Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m).

A notoriously hard horse to ride, Delectation had plenty of headgear on today to help switch him off, something Bowman was able to do as the field was led around by the Hawkes-trained Nostradamus.

“He’s a very hard horse to ride,” winning trainer Waller admitted post-victory.

“With a good jockey like Hugh Bowman on him however (he’s hard to beat).

“He (Bowman) got him to settle beautifully today.”

Soon after settling it was former Golden Slipper winning filly Mossfun, previously undefeated in the mud, who moved up to lead rolling forward ahead of Nostradamus and Rubick who hugged the fence and moved up into second on the turn.

Clear race favourite Kuro, coming off a second in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), meanwhile was struggling to put himself into the race and was still back second last at the 400m.

Mossfun continued to cuddle in the lead from the Gerald Ryan-trained Group 2 winner Rubick before Delectation, last seen finishing seventh behind superstar colt Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in Melbourne on March 14, started running on along the inside.

With just 200m left to travel the eventual Arrowfield 3YO Sprint winner moved up into the lead while Peter Moody’s resuming Sebring filly Bring Me The Maid, 11th last time out in the Coolmore Stud Stakes back in November during the spring, was flying home to put down the challenge.

A known mudlark boasting two wins and a third from her three previous runs on Heavy tracks, Bring Me The Maid put herself right in the race late as many expected her to do and made Delectation work for the win.

Her sweeping run saw her make up lots of ground and she nearly, nearly got to the post first but Delectation held on in the final stride to win by a nose holding off the challenge from a filly who would have grabbed him right on the line had there been just one more metre in the race.

Paul Messara’s returning colt Rekindled Power, racing for the first time since mid-November, crossed a further three-quarters of a length back to snare the $50,000 prize for third.

“We got back as there was a lot of pressure early,” Bowman explained after the win.

“But it was just what the doctor ordered with this horse.

“He can go keenly and was in a beautiful rhythm back in the field.

“This horse ran second to Brazen Beau in the Coolmore Classic in the spring so this horse can gallop.

“He’s got some headgear on as he’s a bit of a finicky horse and it’s hard to get him to produce his best but when he does he’s better than this lot.

“I was confident I could hold on but he was running on tiered legs on a Heavy track.

“Very fulfilling win.”

Waller was also pleased to score the trophy despite the narrow margin.

“He’s been a very frustrating horse to say the least but it was a good win today,” he said.

“Hugh Bowman’s done a fantastic job with this horse.

“Sure he (Delectation) got a bit tired late but who cares.”
