Purton Thrilled to Partner Thunder Lady in Australian Oaks

Three-year-old Thunder Lady has steadily built to the task over three starts this time in and will be perfectly suited to the track and conditions in Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick, according to jockey Zac Purton.

Thunder Lady beat only one runner home in the talent-rich Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) first-up this time but has clearly relished a continued step-up in distance having placed fifth in the Group 3 Keith F Nolan Classic (1600m) and third in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in her two most recent starts.

Thrilled to have picked up the ride on the Mastercraftsman filly for the 2015 Australian Oaks, Purton told Racing Ahead he has been impressed with the form and class displayed by the three-year-old in recent weeks and is confident she is a leading chance for success on Day 2 of The Championships.

“It was a really good run,” Purton said.

“She’s done nothing wrong and John (Sargent) tends to set his horses for certain races and I know he’s set her for this race.

“I’m confident in him having the horse ready – he knows how to do it and get it done.

“She was pretty strong there last start I thought; she was in a good spot so I gave her a good ride but she was probably just one run short.

“I think the big track at Randwick will really suit her. I know in the back of my mind she’s going to get the trip.”

Beginning her career in New Zealand during the 2014 autumn, Thunder Lady debuted in Australia for consecutive finishes in the minor places in a pair of regional New South Wales events before placing fifth in the Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m) on October 4th.

Unlucky to be blocked for a run and third in the McDonalds Newcastle Maiden (1850m) on October 18th, Thunder Lady broke through for a maiden race win in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on November 1st before placing a close second to Set Square in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) only five days later.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Australian Oaks odds, for which Thunder Lady can be taken at a generous quote of $6.50 for success.
