A final field of just nine young fillies are set to face off in the opening Group race on the bumper 10-event program at Royal Randwick this Saturday, the Percy Sykes Stakes 2015 to run as Race 4 at 1:20pm (AEDT).
One of the richest support races on the card outside the four Group 1s for Day 2 of The Championships, this year’s $500,000 Group 3 Girvan Waugh Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) is low on numbers but not depth or class.
Current favourite in the Percy Sykes Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Lake Geneva out in barrier eight for jockey Ryan Moore.
The promising daughter of Fastnet Rock remains a maiden after three career starts, but is paying $2.90 in the latest markets to break through on Saturday.
She has been racing against the very best of her age in both Melbourne and Sydney so far with two Group 1 thirds already on her record.
Two runs into her career she was under two lengths away third to Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in late February.
Then on March 21 in her latest run she was third again, this time finishing even closer just one and a half lengths off Vancouver in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
She runs at Ranwick for the first time in the Percy Sykes but will relish the drop back in class.
Four of her rivals are also at single figures to win including the rails-drawn second elect Serenade ($5).
Craig Williams has the ride on the Michael Moroney-trained daughter of Star Witness who ran seventh in the Golden Slipper second-up when two lengths off the Gai Waterhouse-trained winner in the world’s richest race for juveniles.
She jumped at $91 odds that day but won’t be found at anywhere near that price on the weekend for her first Randwick run.
The three other fillies under $10 to win are then the John O’Shea-trained Ottoman ($6) in barrier two and out to improve on a Golden Slipper ninth, her last start Moonee Valley Listed race winning stablemate Calaverite ($7) in gate seven and Group 2 Magic Night Stakes runner-up Perignon for trainer Gerald Ryan in six ($8).
The early Percy Sykes Stakes betting market mover in from $15 to $12 meanwhile is the lightly-raced Sempre Libera having just her third career start.
Waterhouse prepares the daughter of Medaglia D’Oro who comes off a Rosehill win in the wet from April 1 and will have Brazilian Joao Moreira aboard on Saturday for her autumn acid test.
