The Championships Target Yet to be Confirmed for Red Cadeaux

Expected to accept solely into the final field for Saturday’s Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), travelling foreman Robin Trevor-Jones has revealed the current track conditions at Randwick have led to trainer Ed Dunlop’s team also keeping alive the prospect of a 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) berth.

Red Cadeaux has become a fan favourite since first appearing in Australia in 2011 having placed second in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) a record three times in four starts.

Thrilled with the condition of the veteran since placing a credible fifth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) first-up in March, Trevor-Jones cited the horse’s proven ability on soft surfaces as the major reason for accepting into the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes final field.

“The horse is very effective on soft ground, especially over shorter trips,” Trevor-Jones said.

“There’s a massive plot involved; we’ve put this to the owner, the trainer’s thinking about it and it’s something we have to think about.

“How much it will dry back over during the week we’re gambling on but it will be their call later in the day.

“He’s second in a Dubai World Cup – that’s not a bad run at a mile and a quarter (2000m) and you’ve all seen him run many times at two miles, he’s very effective at two.”

Having confirmed the services of Hugh Bowman for the ride on the Cadeaux Genereux gelding should he run in the Sydney Cup, Trevor-Jones revealed Kerrin McEvoy figures as the major target for the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes ride with Bowman already scheduled to ride Lucia Valentina.

“We’ve also got to think about jockeys as well,” he added.

“Hugh was very kind and rang this morning and was very informative and unfortunately we can’t have his services but I spoke about a few jockeys we were interested in and he agreed with that and thought they would suit the horse.

“Kerrin McEvoy for one – he would be my favourite at the moment anyway.

“He was rung quite early this morning and he just had to check with his agent and I think he was quite pleased with the call.

“The soft ground it will inconvenience a lot of the other horses, we know it won’t inconvenience him and it’s big money.” is currently offering the best odds on both the Sydney Cup and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, for which Red Cadeaux can be taken at a quote of $8 for success in the former and $31 the latter.
