Two Group race features take place at Caulfield Racecourse on Easter Cup Day this Saturday in Melbourne including the 2015 Victoria Handicap, betting tips on the middle-distance clash found below.
A full field lines up in Caulfield Race 8 at 4:50pm (AEDT) for the $150,000 Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) including first emergency Vibrant Rouge who gets a run after the early scratching of the Tony McEvoy-trained Echuca Cup winner Jimando.
Current Victoria Handicap odds at [labrokes] are clearly led by Disposition, the super consistent Perth expat after his fifth win at start number eight.
His opening six career starts all took place in WA including his brave second when just nudged out of the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) win at Ascot in December by Chris Waller’s Sydney visitor Moriarty.
He raced first-up for his new Mornington-based trainer Wez Hunter then at Flemington on February 21 in his Melbourne debut in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) and caught the eye when runner-up to Wandjina who went on to win the Australian Guineas.
Hunter didn’t take his Reset three-year-old into the Guineas but runs him this weekend in the Victoria Handicap, the youngster dominating the markets at $3.60 (in from $3.70) to defeat a field of older rivals.
There are then just two other single figure hopes to win with Amorino ($8) in barrier five and shooting for a third straight win, and Sistine Demon ($9) in gate two who won the this same race 12 months ago.
So can Disposition handle the big field in his Caulfield debut for the win or is there an upset Victoria Handicap result to play out?
#10 Disposition ($3.60)
He’s pretty short considering the big field but the form is too good to ignore here. The former Perth-trained youngster was just off a top Sydney galloper Moriarty back at Ascot in Group 1 company during the summer and caught the eye in his impressive Melbourne debut for the CS Hayes second. The form of that race held up with Wandjina winning the Australian Guineas next time out, Disposition looking to further frank the form here. He’s at the track for the first time but the distance suites (2-1-1-0) and drops back from 56.5kg to 54kg on the weekend making him a genuine lightweight chance who only needs to be fit enough to win with Pike back in the saddle.
#7 Sistine Demon ($9)
Andrew Noblet’s Excites gelding Sistine Demon hasn’t won a race since his victory in this race 12 months ago but he looked on track to improve when fourth over 1400m at Flemington in black-type company behind Amorino on March 14. Likes it at Caulfield (8-2-0-1) despite what an Oakleigh Plate 14th when outclassed in the Group 1 suggests. Getting fitter with every run and from barrier two with 54.5kg could take some catching if he gets to the front and wants to stay there over the 1400m.
#12 Gracious Prospect ($10)
Lots to choose from for third, but the outstanding place rate of the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Gracious Prospect, who has run top three in nine of his past 10 runs is the pull for us. Jumps one outside of Sistine Demon from three on the 54kg minimum here so can go up with the defending champ if he wants to. This well-tried four-year-old ran third in the Super Saturday race on March 14 at Flemington and has already had a crazy 32 starts. Twenty-one of those have been over this distance, and from the two previous Caulfield runs he’s finished second both times.
