A trio of last start winners top the 2015 PJ Bell Stakes field at Randwick on Saturday, the fillies-only showdown one of the nine support races on the Doncaster Mile Day line-up in Sydney.
Due to run as Race 5 at 2:30pm (AEDT), this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Dilmah Tea PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) features a final field of 13 three-year-old fillies.
The top-rated of those is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Nayeli drawn ideally in barrier three with Damien Oliver in the saddle.
He replaces the suspended Blake Shinn who partnered the talented Group 3 winning daughter of More Than Ready for her first-up victory at the track on March 7 in the Listed Fireball Quality (1100m).
Nayeli now shoots for back-to-back Randwick wins and has won one of her previous two second-up runs to date.
The second highest rated chance is then Ron Quinton’s in-form Redoute’s Choice filly Peeping after her fourth win at start number six.
She’s won two from three this time in and two back was runner-up to Nayeli when beaten just a quarter-length in the Fireball.
Peeping improved on that on March 21 at Rosehill for a win over Music Magnate in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) but she did it from barrier eight (of nine) that day and will need to improve with a wide gate 11 draw for her and regular rider Sam Clipperton to overcome this Saturday.
The third of the fillies donning the top three saddlecloths on Saturday after back-to-back wins after success last time out is then the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Pittsburgh Flyer in barrier eight for the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira.
The Street Cry filly, fourth to Fontein Ruby in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last October, won at the same premier Melbourne track on March 14 when defeating former Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake in an upset in the Listed Moomba Plate (1100m).
Saturday however she races in Sydney for the first time so how the Seymour-based filly handles the opposite way of racing will be key to her chances this weekend.
Further down the field are another two last start winning fillies with the Bede Murray-trained Fine Mist drawn well in barrier four on the back of a Warwick Farm win over 1200m and Tommy Berry’s ride Kind Heart who won at this track on March 11 for John Thompson out wide in 12.
Other headline acceptors include Kris Lees’ black type winner Savoureux with last year’s Doncaster Mile winning hoop Zac Purton riding from barrier five, visiting Queenslander Miss Cover Girl and the Bart & James Cummings-trained Darby Munro fourth placed Sultry Feeling.
