2015 Victoria Handicap Field Features Disposition

Consistent Group 1 placed Perth import Disposition is one of the headline acceptors for the Victoria Handicap 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse this Easter Saturday.

The weekend’s feature Melbourne meet is spearheaded by two Group 3 races including the $150,000 Victoria Handicap (1400m) running as Race 8 at 4:50pm (AEDT).

The handicap clash features a capacity field of 16 confirmed starters plus three emergencies, including Wez Hunter’s Rest three-year-old Disposition.

Runner-up in the WA Guineas and Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in Perth during the summer, the up-and-coming gelding ran in Melbourne for the first time first-up on February 21 at Flemington.

There he was runner-up and beaten just a neck by subsequent Australian Guineas winner Wandjina in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m).

He’s been freshened-up since and returns in the Victoria Handicap where WA hoop William Pike takes the reins from barrier eight on the 54kg minimum.

This year’s Victoria Handicap weights are led by the Robert Hickmott-trained 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon (59kg) who is first-up here along with stablemate Gallante (58.5kg).

Eight-year-old Montjeu stallion Green Moon hasn’t won a race since his Melbourne Cup success three years ago and was last seen running fifth in the Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) in mid-November.

Fellow Irish import and son of Montjeu, four-year-old Gallante meanwhile debuts down under in the Victoria Handicap for owner Lloyd Williams who also has a third import The United Stakes in the race.

Progressive stayer Gallante has won three of his six starts back in Europe, including a Group 1 over the mile and a half at Longchamp in the wet last July.

He hasn’t raced since September and could take a bit more acclimatising until Aussie punters see the best out of him, as is the case with the Darren Weir-trained French import Calvin Williams also down to have his maiden run in Australia but drawn wide in 17 (into 15).

Following the Williams-owned duo in the weights is then the Archie Alexander-trained Amorino (57.5kg) drawn a peach in barrier five and shooting for his third win on the trot.

Mark Zahra has the ride on the Snitzel gelding who won a Group 3 at Flemington over this distance on March 7 before his Listed Super Saturday (1400m) success at the same track and distance a week later.

Also coming off wins are the Bart & James Cummings-trained The Peak (54.5kg) who won at the Sunshine Coast on March 7 and Tony McEvoy’s Echuca Cup champ Jimando on the 54kg minimum but drawn out in barrier 13 for jockey Dean Yendall.

Other notable hopes include Winterbottom Stakes runner-up Watermans Bay from WA, Aeronautical coming off a Newmarket Handicap fifth, Lindsay Park’s Super Saturday third placed Gracious Prospect and last year’s Victoria Handicap winner Sistine Demon.
