Gai Waterhouse’s last start Randwick winner Nayeli returns to the track this weekend shooting for back-to-back victories this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival in the PJ Bell Stakes 2015 on Doncaster Mile Day.
One of nine Group races on an all black-type card for Day One of The Championships, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Dilmah PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) attracted 21 three-year-old fillies at nomination stage.
Equal top rated of those is Waterhouse’s More Than Ready filly Nayeli who comes off a first-up win in the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) from March 7.
That was her first win since the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) in Melbourne nearly a year earlier, and took her record to three wins from six starts for a 50% winning strike rate.
The other 85-rated filly nominated for the PJ Bell this weekend is the Kris Lees-trained Onemorezeta, the daughter of Onemorenomore having run fourth to Nayeli in the Fireball.
That was her second-up run after a brave fifth when just over two lengths behind Adrift in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at the same track in mid-February.
Onemorezeta has also won three from six like her major danger this weekend, her biggest success being at Flemington during last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival in the Group 3 Red Roses (1100m).
The Fireball Stakes has produced a number of the top PJ Bell Stakes nominees this autumn including the Ron Quinton-trained runner-up Peeping.
The Redoute’s Choice filly was just a quarter-length off the winner that day on the back of a win at the same track and distance in a Benchmark 70, and improved on that to win the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 21.
Along with Nayeli and Peeping, there is a host of other last start winners nominated for the PJ Bell Stakes on Saturday including the lightly-raced Groovy Gal, the Lee Curtis-trained Press Report, Lee & Shannon Hope’s Pittsburgh Flyer and Progressive.
Street Cry filly Pittsburgh Flyer is a black-type winner thanks to her Listed Moomba Plate (1100m) success at Flemington when defeating Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake in an upset on March 14.
She now shoots for another stakes win on the weekend this time in Sydney where she races for the first time if accepted.
Progressive meanwhile is out to make an impact for John O’Shea and Godolphin when she steps up in class on the weekend following her maiden win at Kembla Grange over 1200m on March 21.
Other notable hopes include Group 1 performed Ygritte coming off a third in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m), Group 1 Thousand Guineas fifth placed Tahini Dancer, progressive O’Reilly filly Swift Lady and the Bart & James Cummings-trained Sultry Feeling who was runner-up to Eloping in the Blue Sapphire last October.
The final fields for the support races that accompany the four Group 1s in Sydney on Saturday are all out on Wednesday morning so stay tuned.
