Takedown made his racing debut with a third place finish behind Exosphere in the Valentines Day Maiden Plate (1000m) at Kembla Grange on February 14, but he took out the Forkbiz Maiden Handicap (1100m) at Hawkesbury on February 26 and stamped himself as a horse to follow when he took out the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) at Canberra on March 8.

Trainer Gary Moore elected to include Takedown in the entries for both The Schweppervescence and the Wellington Boot that will be held tomorrow, but his decision to run the Stratum gelding in The Schweppervescence paid dividends when he kicked away from his rivals at the top of the straight to record a strong win from Street Rapper and Mine Two.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was having his first race wide on Takedown in The Schweppervescence and he was brimming in praise for the two-year-old that he believes will be even better over a longer trip.

“It is always good to get the first one,” McEvoy said.

“He is a progressive, big horse this fella, he has done well over shorter trips and Gary and his son Nick were pretty confident that 1400 was going to suit him today and they were right, so well done to them.

“He bounced quickly, he has a massive stride and the engine to go with it too.

“He is a very genuine colt, who is only going to improve over further and he has a lovely way about him.”

Moore has not has had a great deal of success since he returned to Sydney to continue his training career and he was clearly thrilled that Takedown had delivered him his first city winner during his second training stint in Australia.

“It is fantastic for the family and great for the stable heading into the Easter sales,” Moore said.

“I am an ex-jockey and there is only a few great ex-jockeys that train and it is a great stepping stone for us to be able to deliver the goods and produce a big winner like today.

“It is my first winner in the city this time around.”

Moore is yet to decide on the immediate racing future of Takedown, but the two-year-old is a chance to return to the races in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick in a fortnight.
