A capacity final field of stayers was originally accepted for this year’s $350,000 Listed Mornington Cup (2400m), but three early scratchings have paved the way for the three emergencies to all gain a start.

Vatuvei ($101), Don Doremo ($5.50) and Martinvast ($31) come in to replace #4 Extra Zero, #7 Epingle and star Tassie galloper #13 Genuine Lad who all come out of this afternoon’s Mornington Cup field.

The latest Mornington Cup betting markets at are now led by Akzar in from $4.60 to $4.40 to overcome the equal 59kg top weight and win his first race since the Warrnambool Cup last May.

Ballarat trainer Darren Weir enjoyed a big Group 1 win overnight at Moonee Valley with Lucky Hussler coming from behind to beat home Vain Queen in the William Reid Stakes (1200m).

Now he’ll look to keep the good times coming with his veteran Selkirk eight-year-old Akzar in the Mornington Cup, the gelding coming off a seventh to Spillway in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) from March 14.

The galloper is up in distance then today but has winning form up to 3000m and is down in class so should appreciate the easier company here.

The other single-figure hopes in the markets are then the firming second emergency Don Doremo ($5.50) now guaranteed a run, the Chris Waller-trained Index Linked ($6.50), Team Hawkes’ CF Orr Stakes runner-up Entirely Platinum ($7), and Big Memory ($8) out wide and coming off a second last (15th) in the Australian Cup at Flemington.

#1 Akzar ($4.40)

The favourite carries the big 59kg top weight but this is set to be a genuine staying showdown and with winning form up to 3000m this is a horse that will see it out. Brad Rawiller stays on having been in the saddle for the import’s four most recent runs including a third to Mourinho two back in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m). Australian Cup seventh was brave when beaten under three lengths with 59kg in the Group 1.

#10 Renew ($19)

Plenty of horses a little further down the markets have claims for an upset but Renew stands out for us even from the wide gate. He gets in on 56kg so looks well-weighted with just one kilo more than the weight he carried to a very close third behind Tanby in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 9. Was just a half-length off the winner that day, the 2014 Sandown Cup (3200m) winner another genuine stayer who will have no issue a mile and a half today so long as he doesn’t find it too sharp dropping down from the two miles.

#5 Index Linked ($6.50)

Not sure if the inside alley is really where you want to be jumping from but connections chose this race for the six-year-old over Rosehill’s Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes today so that tells you something. The seven-year-old has won his past two on the trot with a one length win over Extra Zero in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield last month and then a narrow victory in the Listed Yarra Valley Cup (1950m) on March 15. Only has winning form up to 2000m however and is yet to step out over the 2400m so the distance is the test. The weight will help with that however, the gelding dropping back from 60kg last start to 58.5kg here.
