Hauraki To Australian Derby Following Tulloch Stakes Victory

Hauraki stamped himself as an 2015 Australian Derby contender and delivered jockey James McDonald his fifth win of the afternoon with an impressive victory in the 2015 Tulloch Stakes.

McDonald elected to settle Hauraki worse than midfield in the early stages of the race, while the well-backed Caped Crusader took up the running.

Hauraki tracked into the race beautifully and he responded extremely well when asked for an extra effort by McDonald to put away his rivals quickly and take out the 2015 Tulloch Stakes from Omeros and Merion.

The Tulloch Stakes victory of Hauraki gave McDonald his first ever five-timer, but he was quick to pay credit to the Godolphin team that had delivered him all but one of his winners.

“My first year I was here I rode four on a day and that was the most, so it is a massive thrill and I can’t do it without the blue colours on,” McDonald said.

“All I wanted to do was switch him off, he was keen but a comfortable keen.

“I tipped this horse as my best ride two weeks ago and I tipped him on the radio again as my best ride and I am glad that he saluted today.”

Trainer John O’Shea was very bullish about the chances of Hauraki heading into the Tulloch Stakes and he was thrilled that the Reset colt was able to get the job done in the Group 2 event this afternoon.

O’Shea confirmed that Hauraki will press on to the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick next weekend and the in-form trainer is confident that the three-year-old will prove more than competitive.

“We believe that he can,” O’Shea said when asked if Hauraki can win the Australian Derby.

“I thought that he was pretty strong through the line there today, we have always felt he could win a Derby and were trying to be a little greedy and try to win an Australian Guineas along the way, but it just didn’t quite work out.

“We have got him home, we have got him well and hopefully next Saturday he acquits himself well.

“It has been a big day for the team and they deserve all the accolades that come their way.

“Hopefully we can continue on going forward.”
