The final race on The BMW Stakes Day card in Sydney today is the Neville Sellwood Stakes 2015, a set weights plus penalties clash where a host of genuine staying types have claims for the win.
Originally attracting a final field of 13, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) is down to 11 following the scratchings of Mouro and the in-form Chris Waller-trained Index Linked who instead runs in the Mornington Cup in Victoria this afternoon.
It’s a tight Neville Sellwood Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au with five single figure hopes led by the firming $4 favourite Pornichet.
Jumping from barrier seven with Blake Shinn riding on 55.5kg the Gai Waterhouse-trained French import has firmed in from $4.80 to his current price to win his fifth race at start number 13.
He comes via a fifth to Burbero at the track a fortnight ago when beaten only one and a quarter lengths in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m), with Shinn in the saddle, where he had 57kg.
He drops down in weights for this and should be improving third-up chasing his first win since the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) in mid-November last year.
Close second and third picks in the Neville Sellwood Stakes odds are then Dear Demi ($5) and the 59.5kg top weight Foreteller ($6) who has eased right out from $4.20 due to the hefty kilos.
Getting in on 54.5kg, Clarry Conners’ smart mare Dear Demi looks a nice light weight chance today to improve on a second last when 12th and beaten four lengths by Plucky Belle in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) last start.
She’s up in distance for this but down in class taking on the male rivals, the Dehere five-year-old’s latest win being the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley last September.
Foreteller meanwhile is one of four in the race for Sydney’s leading trainer Waller, the veteran eight-year-old coming via a ninth to Spillway in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.
He’s back in Sydney though this weekend and has won three of his previous eight Rosehill starts.
Rounding out the single-figure Neville Sellwood hopes this year are then the Team Hawkes-trained French import Himalaya Dream ($7) in a nice gate four draw for Tommy Berry and coming off a win over 1500m at the track a fortnight ago, and the widely-drawn former Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur ($7.50) for Waller out in barrier 12.
