Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
One of the early features on a bumper nine-race Rosehill Gardens program in Sydney this weekend is the 2015 Emancipation Stakes for the female gallopers, betting odds on the showdown found below.
There are just 10 fillies and mares left in this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) field after the early scratchings of #2 Dear Demi and #12 Thinking Of You.
Emancipation Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is all about one mare however with the striking Chris Waller-trained grey Catkins the $1.85 odds-on favourite.
The five-year-old daughter of Dubawi, third in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) in Melbourne during the spring, won the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) – Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) double at Rosehill in her opening two autumn starts before going down to Cosmic Endeavour in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at the start of the month at Randwick.
She returns to Rosehill, where she boasts a tidy record of seven wins from 13 starts here though and is down in class with Cosmic Endeavour absence from her list of rivals.
The only other single figure fancy for the upset at $8 is then the in-form Madam Gangster who has won her past four on the trot including the Group 3 Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last time out on March 7.
So will Catkins atone for her Group 1 loss last time out with a win here or will there be a boilover from longer priced hopeful such as the rails-drawn Gypsy Diamond ($13) or market mover and former Group 1 winner Peggy Jean ($17)?
#1 Catkins ($1.85)
She was beaten last time out but will atone here. Too classy to ignore coming off a Group 1 second. Drawn wide in nine but time and ability to overcome. Jockey James McDonald is in flying form like the mare he’s on and the duo should make for imposing competition. Catkins boasts a great record at her pet track (13-7-3-1) and the return to it here will be key.
#7 Madam Gangster ($8)
The next best in betting is deservedly so with the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Seymour raider shooting four her fifth consecutive win. The four-year-old handled the class rise in the Group 3 Tressady Stakes at Flemington earlier in the month and now steps out over further than 1400m for the first time in her Sydney debut.
#8 My Sabeel ($12)
A logjam of genuine place chances to sort through but with a gun barrier two draw this Kevin Moses-trained veteran stands out. The Savabeel seven-year-old has had 46 starts and while she has won just six of those she’s capable of big runs under the right conditions.
