Running one race before the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m), this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) is due to jump as Race 6 at 9:15pm (AEDT) and features a final field of 10.

Heading the latest Sunline Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at a firm odds-on price of $1.55 is the Robert Smerdon-trained import Noble Protector.

The Haafhd mare has had three previous runs down under including her last start win in the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) over the Flemington mile first-up on March 14.

She gets two weeks between runs and boasts a strong second-up record of two wins and a third from three previous attempts.

Tonight is her first look at Moonee Valley but the British import is in flying form and has handled everything put in her path so far, and her record over the distance (4-2-1-0) also bodes well.

Three other runners are also under $10 for an upset Sunline Stakes result tonight with the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Matron Stakes runner-up Marianne ($8), Star Fashion ($8.50) coming via a sixth in the Tressady Stakes from the start of the month and early market mover Girl In Flight ($8.50) for Cranbourne’s Robbie Griffiths.

So will the shortie in the market salute for the punters or will one of her longer-priced rivals give the bookies a win in the Sunline?

#4 Noble Protector ($1.55)

The odds-on price is deserving and this imported mare is improving with every run she has down under. Think that will continue here and that barrier one will see her fly around the notoriously tight Moonee Valley circuit. Don’t think there will be as much in the finish as last time but the favourite is classy, she comes off an impressive 4.5 length Group 3 Flemington win, boasts an excellent second-up record (3-2-0-1) with nothing suggesting she won’t be just as strong here.

#3 Girl In Flight ($8.50)

There’s been a tickle in the markets for this Commands four-year-old who warms up the track for her stablemate Angelic Light who is set to jump favourite in the following race, the Group 1 William Reid Stakes. Girl In Flight is second-up here after a good fourth to Madam Gangster on March 7 in the Tressady at Flemington over 1400m. She’s had one previous look at the 1600m but has strong form right up to 2000m having run second in a Group 2 over the distance during the Cup Carnival in the spring. Has won over 1800m and jumps from barrier five so has options with the mid-field draw.

#5 La Amistad ($26)

Think at $26 this impeccably bred Team Hawkes-trained Redoute’s Choice mare is way overs. The five-year-old returns to racing here and was last seen running third when up against the boys in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) last Victoria Derby Day. She’s yet to race at the Valley, and while she hasn’t won first-up before she does boast two third place finishes from her four previous resuming runs so is a definite top three chance again here. Will be improving off whatever she does here getting out over more distance but has class and Dwayne Dunn knows how to ride her.
