The bookies are having a hard time separating the chances of the top three sprinters in Friday night’s 2015 William Reid Stakes betting markets, the odds for the Moonee Valley showdown narrowly led by Angelic Light.
Night racing lights up Melbourne’s Moonee Valley track tomorrow night, the action headlined by the $400,000 Group 1 Brown Baldwin William Reid Stakes (1200m) running as race seven at 9:45pm (AEDT).
The William Reid Stakes field features 14 sprint stars this year, six of which are at single-figure odds to win in the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Sitting top of the William Reid Stakes odds at $5 is the nicely-drawn mare Angelic Light in barrier four for jockey Damien Oliver who is after his second win in the weight-for-age classic following his success on Apache Cat (2009).
Robbie Griffiths’ Holy Roman Emperor mare Angelic Light is first-up here not having raced since her fifth in Perth behind Magnifisio in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) last November.
Before that she was racing very competitively here at Moonee Valley, where she boasts a good record of three wins and three minor placings from seven starts.
She was runner-up to Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at the track last October, and with a strong first-up record looks imposing here in her resuming run.
Hot on Angelic Light’s heels in the William Reid Stakes markets are then two $6 second elects Rebel Dane (barrier seven) and Vain Queen (barrier nine).
The Gary Portelli-trained Rebel Dane has had three previous runs over this track and distance for just the one third when beaten just a long neck by Buffering in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) last September.
He hasn’t raced since a seventh to Terravista in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington last November and has Craig Williams in the saddle again.
Mares have a strong record in the William Reid with two saluting in the past four years with Black Caviar winning in 2013 and 2011.
Along with the early favourite Angelic Light, Vain Queen is the next best backed female galloper in this year’s edition.
John Sadler’s Artie Schiller five-year-old is second-up having returned on February 28 at Caulfield when a close fourth to Shamal Wind in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
She drew barrier nine that day and was ridden by Damian Lane, Lane replaced by Nicholas Hall for the William Reid where the mare has the same gate as last time out.
Barrier nine hasn’t produced a William Reid Stakes winner since Virage De Fortune (2006) but Spirit Of Boom won last year from gate eight.
Third pick to win Friday evening’s feature is then the market mover Earthquake backed in from $8.50 to $7.
Drawn nicely in barrier three for Tommy Berry the John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel filly is out to become the first three-year-old William Reid Stakes winner since Foxwedge, also prepared by O’Shea, in 2012.
Winner of last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes, Earthquake is third-up for the season and comes off a close second in a Listed race at Flemington from March 14.
The other hopes under $10 in the markets are then Peter Moody’s Husson mare Peron ($7.50) in barrier one and the resuming son of Husson Lucky Hussler ($9).
