Rudy Out Wide in 2015 Doncaster Prelude Field

10 horses are set to run in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) at Rosehill this Saturday, on trial for the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) a week later on April 4.

Headlining the field is the Helen Page-trained Rudy who will carry the lone topweight of 58kg and jump from the widest starting gate. The four-year-old gelding enjoyed a successful summer in Brisbane, winning the Listed Recognition Stakes (1630m) on November 29, before travelling to Sydney for the first time in December to win the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m).

Following a short, two-month spell Rudy resumed for second place in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) on February 28 before running an honest eighth in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) on March 14, just two and three-quarter lengths off the winner Burbero.

John O’Shea will deliver a dual-pronged attack on the race after accepting with both Malice and San Diego.

Four-year-old gelding Malice is set to resume in the 2015 Doncaster Prelude after he was last seen winning the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) on November 29. He will jump from barrier seven with Sam Clipperton to ride.

Stablemate San Diego will enjoy a good start to the race from barrier two with champion hoop James McDonald to ride. The four-year-old gelding will also have fitness on his side after winning a Benchmark 85 over 1350 metres first-up on February 21 followed by a minor placing in the Ajax Stakes two weeks ago, just a quarter of a length behind the winner.

Both Godolphin-bred horses will carry the minimum weight of 55.5kg.

The Chris Waller-trained Bull Point ran second in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) back in October but has finished outside the placings in all three of his subsequent starts. The gelding was just one and a half lengths off winner Heart Testa in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) on February 14 before finishing midfield in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) two weeks later.

Bull Point will jump from barrier three with Damien Oliver to ride while the Team Hawkes-trained Leebaz will be one gate out with Tommy Berry.

Leebaz won the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) last May followed by a close second in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m). The five-year-old gelding finished just shy of the placings in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 8 before resuming in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 7, finishing end of the field in sixth place (of eight runners).
