2015 Vinery Stud Stakes Field: Sweet And Speedy Drawn Ideally

The Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) is one of two Group One races running at Rosehill this Saturday. The final field for the race was released Wednesday morning with 14 three-year-old fillies set to tackle the middle-distance trip.

Headlining the field is the John Thompson-trained First Seal, who will jump from barrier seven with James McDonald to ride. The filly has run in the first two in eight of her nine career starts, stepping up to 2000 metres for the first time this campaign after running second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over the trip last October.

First Seal was outrun by Adrift in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 14 before winning the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) with ease two weeks later. The filly was last seen in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 14 for which she was the $1.60 odds-on favourite. She struck the front 250m out, kept trying but was pipped on the post by Plucky Belle.

Peter Moody’s Sweet And Speedy is due to jump from barrier 10 with Brenton Avdulla to ride, which is the most successful starting gate for the Vinery Stud Stakes, delivering seven winners in the past 32 years.

Sweet And Speedy has finished in the first three in five of her six career starts, including winning the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) on February 21. The filly ran unplaced for the first time in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 7.

Chris Waller is set to deliver a triple-pronged attack on the 2015 Vinery Stud Stakes after accepting with Amicus, Winx, and Ballet Suite.

Amicus won the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) back in October but has run unplaced in all three of her starts this campaign. She did finish very strongly in the Coolmore Classic two weeks ago, just a quarter of a length behind the winner in fourth place. The filly will jump from barrier eight with Tim Clark.

Winx won the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) third-up on March 14 in a strong finish and will be ridden by champion hoop Tommy Berry from barrier six while Ballet Suite will step up to black-type racing for the first time in the Group One race after winning a Benchmark 70 on March 11. The filly will jump wide from barrier 13 with Kerrin McEvoy.

Ciaron Maher’s Set Square is a winner over the trip of the Vinery Stud Stakes after winning the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) by two lengths on October 18 followed by a one and a half length win in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on November 6. She will jump from barrier 12 with jockey Craig Williams.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Adrift is set to relish the 2000 metre trip of the Vinery Stud Stakes after winning the Light Fingers Stakes first-up last month. The filly will jump from barrier five with Damien Oliver.

Slightly Sweet has had a successful autumn preparation thus far, earning minor placings in both the Light Fingers Stakes and Surround Stakes before winning the Group 3 Keith Nolan Classic (1600m) on March 13.

The Jason Coyle-trained filly is due to start from barrier three with Kathy O’Hara.
