Williams Books Set Square Ride in 2015 Vinery Stud Stakes

This weekend is set to be one of firsts for three-year-old Set Square. The Ciaron Maher-trained filly will travel to Sydney for the first time to contest the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) where she’ll be ridden by jockey Craig Williams for the first time.

Set Square was due to partner regular jockey Hugh Bowman in the $400,000 feature race but Maher had to find a new jockey after he was suspended for a careless riding charge at Rosehill last Saturday on Golden Slipper Day.

The filly has had two starts this campaign, running second in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) first-up on February 21 before earning a minor placing in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) on March 14.

Maher is keen for Set Square to return to her ideal distance of 2000 metres on Saturday, believing this will be the filly’s advantage against headliner First Seal.

The John Thompson-trained filly has finished in the first two in eight of her nine career starts but is much better suited running between 1200m-1600m.

“Getting out over 2000 metres plays to my filly’s advantage, obviously First Seal is very brilliant but it will be interesting,” Maher told Racing Victoria.

“She’ll have a gallop on the course proper (at Rosehill) on Tuesday morning and she’s pretty right to go.

“Craig is in good form so I’m happy to have him on Saturday.”

After winning her maiden over a mile back on October 8, Set Square won the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) by two lengths 10 days later followed by the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on November 6, which she won by one and a half lengths.

Set Square settled well on the fence but copped a check at the 1800m. She tracked up on the fence and clicked up, taking a split and surging away to an easy victory.

She is one of just four Victorian fillies nominated for the 2015 Vinery Stud Stakes, of a total 20, alongside The Vanity winner Sweet And Speedy, Lee & Shannon Hope’s Fenway, and Pat Hyland’s Arianne.

The final field and barrier draw for the Vinery Stud Stakes will be released on Wednesday morning, followed by the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au. Open your betting account to receive up to $250 in a bonus match on your first bet.
