After winning the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) in April 2013, Fiveandahalfstar will return to defend his title in the $1.5 million race this Saturday.
Fiveandahalfstar is nominated for both The BMW and Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill this Saturday but following an impressive workout at the Kensington track this morning (Tuesday), trainer Anthony Cummings made the call to tackle the Group One feature race.
“I was keen to see how he worked this morning and pulled up so the plan is to run him in the BMW on Saturday,” Cummings said via Racenet.
“He had a stronger gallop on Saturday than today but today was just a really nice piece of work.
“Pulled up well in himself, very collected and ready to take the step up to 2400 (metres).”
Fiveandahalfstar spent 22 months on the sidelines after winning The BMW back in 2013 due to a reoccurring injury but finally resumed in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) on February 14, finishing second-last.
The gelding has since had a further two starts, finishing outside the placings in both the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m), however he has improved with each run.
Cummings is confident Fiveandahalfstar will once again improve in the 2015 The BMW, setting him up to be back near top form for the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 11.
“Part of the thinking of going to the 2400 (metres) on Saturday is to be sure that he’s fit for the Queen Elizabeth during The Championships,” he said.
“I certainly think he’ll run his best race that day, he’ll have to, but I’m expecting him to run well on both days.”
The BMW final field and barrier draw is due to be released Wednesday morning, after which the betting market will go live at Ladbrokes.com.au. Open your betting account to receive up to $250 in a bonus match on your first bet.
