With $350,000 in total prizemoney on offer plus an automatic entry to the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) during the spring for the winner, this race is very enticing and it’s not hard to see why it has attracted a large and talented field of potential runners.

Headlining the 2015 Mornington Cup nominations is the Peter Moody-trained Au Revoir. The five-year-old horse won the Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) back on November 15 but has failed to make anything of his two starts this campaign. He ran fifth in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) on February 28, just two and a quarter lengths behind winner Mourinho, but ran third-last in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 14.

Moody has nominated another three runners for the Cup – Sir John Hawkwood, two-mile success Vatuvei, and Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m) runner-up Wish Come True.

Other highly rated potential runners with a handicap rating of 100+ include Akzar, Big Memory, Entirely Platinum, Epingle, Extra Zero, Index Linked, and Sonntag.

Darren Weir’s Akzar scored a minor placing in the Peter Young Stakes before finishing an honest seventh in the Australian Cup, Team Hawkes’ Entirely Platinum has finished runner-up in both the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), Michael Kent’s Epingle was runner-up to Au Revoir in the Sandown Classic, and Chris Waller’s Index Linked won the Yarra Valley Cup (1950m) one week ago.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Extra Zero is one runner that punters will have their eye on if he lines-up in the 2015 Mornington Cup on Saturday. The eight-year-old gelding was the $101 roughie in the Australian Cup a fortnight ago but finished runner-up to stablemate Spillway, with just a millimetre between them. Extra Zero is also nominated for both the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) and Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Also coming via the Australian Cup are Tony McEvoy’s Big Memory and Henry Dwyer’s Sonntag, who finished second-last and last respectively.

Big Memory is a proven stayer, earning placings in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) back in November.

Other horses nominated for the Mornington Cup include Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) winner and runner-up Renew and Like A Carousel.

One notable absentee from the 2015 Mornington Cup nominations is The Cleaner. Trainer Mick Burles has opted to change course with the popular galloper due to a hefty weight allocation of 61.5kg.

Ladbrokes.com.au is offering new customers up to $250 in a bonus match on their first bets. Don’t miss out on yours!
