Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Nominations for the Group 3 Kingdom Stakes (1200m) closed on Monday morning, with a total of 17 horses declaring their interest in the sprint race.
Featured in the nominations is the Chris Waller-trained Heart Testa, who was due to run in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) last Saturday before finding himself scratched due to a wide barrier draw.
The five-year-old gelding has had a lengthy campaign, running eight consecutive starts since last October. He enjoyed a minor placing in the Listed Ladies Day Cup (1400m) on November 6 before winning the Kingswood Handicap (1350m) nine days later.
Heart Testa returned to the winner’s circle on February 14, winning the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) half a length from Driefontein. The gelding went forward but was trapped three wide. He was on the speed and only a head back into the bend before hitting the front 200m out and doing enough to win.
Waller will also saddle Rugged Cross in the 2015 Kingdom Stakes. The six-year-old gelding hasn’t been seen since last September when he ran second-last in the Group 3 Shannon Stakes (1500m).
Headlining the nominations is Anthony Cummings’ Fontelina. The six-year-old gelding was last seen running a very close second in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last March. He was due to resume in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 7 but was scratched from the race after getting kicked by a stablemate, which means he could now return to the track one year to the day since he was last seen.
Fontelina is also nominated for the 2015 William Reid Stakes this Friday night.
John O’Shea, Peter Moody, and Joseph Pride have all nominated two horses for the Kingdom Stakes each, which means they could all deliver dual-pronged attacks on the race.
O’Shea could saddle five-year-old gelding Generalife and four-year-old horse Sidestep. Generalife enjoyed minor success in the spring, which included running a very close second in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m). He was last seen running fourth in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) on November 29, just half a length off winner I’m Imposing.
Sidestep was last seen in Perth during the Summer Racing Carnival but couldn’t manage to place in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on November 22.
Moody has nominated both five-year-old mare Peron and last-start winner Sino Eagle for the Kingdom Stakes while Pride could saddle seven-year-old gelding Rain Affair and Target In Sight, who was last seen winning the Group 3 Maureen McCarten Stakes (1100m) ahead of Deep Field on March 14.
