The Group 3 TL Baillieu Handicap (1400m) is one of nine races running at Rosehill this Saturday, attracting 15 juveniles during nominations Monday morning.
John O’Shea has nominated two Godolphin horses for the two-year-old race – Inner Circle and Italy. Inner Circle failed to make the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) field last Saturday after running fourth in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) but now has his sights on the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 4 at Randwick.
The $1 million race on day one of The Championships is set to be an illustrious affair that will see the winners of the two feature two-year-old races during the autumn – the Blue Diamond Stakes and Golden Slipper – vie for juvenile supremacy, or perhaps an outsider will cause an upset. That very outsider could come via the 2015 TL Baillieu Handicap.
The other John O’Shea-trained juvenile nominated for the race is Italy. The filly was once an early Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper favourite but an unplaced run in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) and minor placing in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) put an end to those plans. The filly has one more chance to impress as a two-year-old during the autumn and earn some big prizemoney in the Sires Produce Stakes yet she’ll need to impress in Saturday’s race first.
Also set to deliver dual-pronged attacks in the race are Gerald Ryan and Peter & Paul Snowden, who have nominated two runners each.
Ryan could saddle Cartier Rock and Heavenly Hand while the Snowden’s have nominated Delawar and Wolf Cry, who has finished third in all three of his starts.
Wolf Cry has been commendable yet unlucky since debuting in the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) back in October, earning the title of consistent minor placer. He was less than a length off Haptic in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on February 14 before running six lengths behind Exosphere in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) two weeks later.
The Snowden’s chances at winning the 2015 Sires Produce Stakes will be high as they saddle Blue Diamond winner Pride Of Dubai. Gai Waterhouse, who just won the Golden Slipper on Saturday with Vancouver, will look to increase her chances by running Street Rapper in the 2015 TL Baillieu Handicap.
After two previous attempts, the colt finally nabbed his maiden on March 5 at Wyong, winning the 1350 metre race by over three lengths.
