Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer David Brideoake has confirmed that Griante will make her debut at Group 1 level when she contests the 2015 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Griante recorded a maiden win at Group level when she took out the Group 3 Sportingbet Series Final (1200m) at Caulfield on October 11 and she returned to racing with a credible fourth behind Tycoon Tara in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 14 before she returned to winning form with a tough effort in the Group 3 Wenona Girl Quality (1200m) at Royal Randwick on March 7.
Brideoake told Racing.com that Griante had come through her Wenona Girl Quality victory in outstanding condition and he believes that the Good Journey mare is worthy of a chance at the highest level of racing in the William Reid Stakes.
“She’s done really well since her trip to Sydney and I think it’s a good opportunity for her to have a shot at a Group 1,” Brideoake said.
“She’s won a couple of Group 3s, it’s her third run, she’s in fine shape and has continued to improve, she ran a class record in Sydney and she’s got excellent form around Shamal Wind who went on and won the Oakleigh Plate so I certainly don’t think that she’ll be out of her depth.”
Griante has done the majority of her racing in Melbourne, but she will be having her first race start at Moonee Valley in the William Reid Stakes this weekend.
The four-year-old has an excellent record around the tight-turning Caulfield track and Brideoake said that the talented mare gives him every indication that she will relish the unique Moonee Valley track in the William Reid Stakes.
“I’m really keen to see this mare run around Moonee Valley, I just have an inkling the track will suit her, she’s got a very quick turn of foot,” Brideoake said.
“She galloped Saturday morning and it was probably as good a gallop as she’s ever put in.”
Griante has been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 11, but Brideoake said that the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) on the same day is a more likely option for his star mare.
The 2015 William Reid Stakes nominations will be released this afternoon and they are set to include Group 1 winners Rebel Dane and Famous Seamus, talented mare Angelic Light and potentially Team Hawkes-trained Deep Field.
