Managing owner Grant Morgan has confirmed that talented colt Brazen Beau will not contest the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes at Royal Randwick on April 4.
Brazen Beau stamped himself as one of the best sprinters in Australia when he upstaged Chautauqua, Terravista and Lankan Rupee to win the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 14, but Morgan told AAP that the son of I Am Invincible will not be given the opportunity to take on the older horses again in the T.J. Smith Stakes and will instead be saved for the 2015 Royal Ascot Meeting.
“The TJ Smith was certainly tempting after the way he won the Newmarket, but we had set out a plan even before Darley became involved which was two autumn starts and then Royal Ascot in June,” Morgan said.
“The program was mapped out for straight racing at which he excels.
“He hasn’t been around a turn this preparation and the straight sprints in England appeal.
“We also had to think about the possibility of a wet track in the TJ Smith which he doesn’t like.
“He will have another week in the paddock and get ready for the trip and the races.”
Australian sprinters have previously had success om both the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes (1006m) and Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1207m) at Royal Ascot and Morgan confirmed that connections had yet to decide what Group 1 sprint three-year-old will contest, but he revealed that jockey Joao Moreira, who has steered Brazen Beau to victory on three occasions, had been booked to take the ride.
“We haven’t ruled either one out,” he said.
“It will be one or the other.
“He has to travel there but he is such a relaxed horse we don’t think there will be any problems.
“Jo Moreira will be riding in whichever race he runs in.”
Brazen Beau was purchased for just $70,000 at the 2013 Inglis Summer Classic Yearling Sale, but he has recorded five wins from ten race starts and will stand as a stallion at Darley next breeding season after being acquired in a lucrative deal for connections.
