Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The 2015 William Reid Stakes nominations have been released and 23 sprinters are a chance of contesting the Group 1 event at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Rebel Dane has not been seen at the races since he finished seventh behind Terravista in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 8 last year and he has been set for a first-up tilt at the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) by trainer Gary Portelli.
The California Dane entire has not recorded a race win since he took out the 2013 edition of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), but he has been desperately unlucky in both of his race starts at Moonee Valley last year and he finished third in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) on September 26 and fourth in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).
Another talented sprinter that has been set for a first-up tilt at the William Reid Stakes is Robbie Griffiths-trained Angelic Light.
Angelic Light returned to racing after a lengthy injury lay-off during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival and she stamped herself as one of the most consistent sprinters in Australia with a string of impressive performances.
The Holy Roman Emperor mare upset Lankan Rupee to take out the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 6 and she was extremely unlucky when second in the Manikato Stakes before she was unable to perform at her best in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 22.
Trust In A Gust has not been seen at the races since his recorded a tough win in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11, but he has an excellent first-up record and he stamped himself as a genuine Group 1 galloper during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival after completing the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes/Toorak Handicap double.
One galloper that has already had a couple of race starts during the 2015 Melbourne Festival Of Racing is Earthquake, who has been confirmed as a William Reid Stakes starter this weekend and will be ridden by Golden Slipper winning hoop Tommy Berry.
Earthquake started her autumn preparation with a slightly disappointing effort in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28, but she returned to a semblance of her best form with a second place finish in the Listed MSS Security Stakes at Flemington on March 14.
Famous Seamus was included in the field for the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) last weekend, but trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith elected to scratch the Elusive City gelding from the race and save him for the William Reid Stakes.
The six-year-old recorded a maiden win at Group 1 level when he took out the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) in Brisbane last year and he was another horse that was desperately unlucky in the Manikato Stakes.
One of the most interesting runners in the 2015 William Reid Stakes nominations is Wez Hunter-trained Disposition.
Disposition made his Melbourne racing debut with a second place finish behind Wandjina in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on February 21, but he was ruled out of the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) after slipping and falling during trackwork, but he could contest the William Reid Stakes on Friday night before he heads to Sydney for The Championships.
Group 1 winner Bel Sprinter, consistent sprinter Fontelina, Godolphin galloper Generalife, Newmarket Handicap fourth placegetter Lord Of The Sky, Darren Weir-trained Lucky Hussler, talented mare Peron and John Sadler-trained Vain Queen have also been included in the 2015 William Reid Stakes nominations.
