Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A capacity field of 16 sprinters tackled the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill this afternoon with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sweet Idea breaking her Group One drought first-up.
The four-year-old mare had seen a massive drift in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au leading into the race with her odds easing from $10 out to $18. Punters that backed Sweet Idea to win The Galaxy enjoyed a healthy payout.
Team Hawkes’ Deep Field was fast out the gates to lead ahead of Chloe In Paris, Kuro, and Va Pensiero, holding a nice lead at the turn for home. However he soon dropped out of the race with Sweet Idea coming up the outside to flash home and win by two and a quarter lengths with second and third was a photo finish that eventually went to Kuro and Miracles Of Life, with just a short half-head between them.
Sweet Idea really wanted the win, pinning back her ears like a true contender and breaking her Group One drought once and for all.
Blake Shinn delivered the beautifully patient winning ride, getting into a perfect position in the final 300 metres and really poping off thereafter.
“These are the days you want to try and put your name up in lights,” the hoop said.
“What a horse. She’s a war horse this one, been in the Group 1 placegetters not sure how many times but she backed up year after year.
“It’s great for Gai and the connections but also for the horse to be recognized at this top level and finally get one.
“I was [quietly confident about her chances]. Her first trial was really good and she didn’t have her blinkers on in the second trial but Gai put them back on today and she can get them right for these big days.”
Gai Waterhouse really left no stone unturned in looking for victory in the Galaxy. Sweet Idea had two hot trials in the past month and the blinkers were on.
“She was just too good for them today,” the trainer said.
“Blake and I had a quiet talk in the jockeys room before and I told him to just give her a little breathing space, you don’t want to use her up too soon. He did exactly that, it was a magical ride and I’m so thrilled for the owners.
“We’ve wanted the Group One and she got it her first start back, what a mare.”
