Three-year-old filly Press Report will enjoy the return to stakes racing on Saturday after a short deviation to a Benchmark 80 race last month.
Press Report was one of 14 three-year-olds that accepted for the Listed The Sebring (1200m) on Wednesday but four horses have since defected to other races, including Mossfun to the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m), which is only set to benefit Press Report.
The Lee Curtis-trained filly was tested at distances between 1400-2000m during the spring, where she ran fourth in both the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), but the trainer is now adamant she is a bona fide sprinter.
“I really believe she is a sprinter. She ran well over the longer distances but my gut feeling is we can get the best from her over 1200 and 1400 metres,” Curtis told Sky Racing.
“She is a very good horse and I want to see her at her best.”
Following three months in the spelling paddock, Press Report finished last in the 11-horse Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) on February 14 but was only four lengths behind winner Adrift. The filly was then sent to a Benchmark 80 over 1200m at Warwick Farm on February 28, which she comfortably won by three-quarters of a length.
Press Report will jump from barrier seven with Jason Collett in the 2015 The Sebring, and is currently a $12 hopeful in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Curtis isn’t bothered by the odds, believing the race is the perfect time for Press Report to show off her class.
The trainer revealed that a good run in The Sebring could send the filly to the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) or Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 4, while being aimed towards the Brisbane Winter Carnival in May-June.
“If she ran well then there’s the PJ Bell for fillies at Randwick or even the TJ Smith, although that might be too hard.
“I think her best chance for a Group One win could be in the Brisbane carnival.
“She is enjoying her work and is at least as well as she was before she raced at Warwick Farm.”
