A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
While the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) have both attracted small fields of just seven horses apiece this Saturday, the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) has attracted a capacity field of 16 runners plus two emergencies.
Six of those 18 potential runners are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Team Hawkes’ Deep Field at odds of $4.60. This is quite a drift from the horse’s opening price of $3.80 however he remains the favourite (for now).
Deep Field has placed in all seven of his career starts and managed to place in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) against the world’s highest-rated sprinter Lankan Rupee and eventual Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) winner Brazen Beau. However he failed to win the Group 3 Maureen McCarten Stakes (1100m) last time out on March 14, which was a relatively easy field.
There are a number of talented sprinters running in the 2015 Galaxy, check out our betting tips for the race below.
#5 Deep Field ($4.60)
The four-year-old horse’s price continues to ease so now is the perfect time to jump aboard the Deep Field train and back him at lucrative odds. The Team Hawkes-trained horse has won five of his seven career starts and placed in the other two, has a great record over 1100 metres, and runs well on good tracks – this all adds up to a good run in The Galaxy if you ask me. Deep Field won the Listed Tattersalls Club Lightning (1100m) by three lengths on October 18 and ran third in the Lightning Stakes on February 21. However he really dropped the ball in the Maureen McCarten Stakes last time out, which he should have easily won but instead ran second in. The horse will need to overcome a wide start from the outside gate with Tommy Berry to ride.
#4 Sweet Idea ($8.50)
Gai Waterhouse’s Sweet Idea is resuming in The Galaxy but two barrier trials in the past month should have the mare ready to race against her fit rivals. The four-year-old has placed in 15 of her 18 career starts and has won three of her four first-up runs. Sweet Idea enjoyed plenty of success during the spring, including winning the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m), before running second in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on November 1. Sweet Idea has run in the first two in all 13 of her runs on good tracks however she has not run over 1100 metres since 2012.
#6 Avoid Lightning ($11)
Rounding out our Galaxy trifecta tips is the Les Bridge-trained Avoid Lightning, who will jump from barrier six with Tim Clark to ride. The six-year-old mare has placed in 17 of her 24 career starts, seven of which were over 1100 metres. Avoid Lightning won the Listed June Stakes (1100m) by two and three-quarter lengths last June before ending her campaign with a win in the Group 3 Nivison (1200m). The mare resumed in the Group 2 Millie Fox (1300m) on February 21, running third to Catkins, but will enjoy the step back down to 1100 metres.
