A field of 11 potential stayers will line-up in the race, five of which are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au. Leading the odds is the Murray Baker-trained Maygrove at $3.40.

The four-year-old gelding enjoyed success in New Zealand during the summer, finishing runner-up in the Listed Marton Cup (2200m) on January 10 before winning the Group 2 Wellington Cup (2400m) two weeks later.

Maygrove got his first start of the current campaign in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on March 7, finishing just one and a half lengths off winner Phrases in fourth place.

The gelding will jump midfield from barrier seven with Hugh Bowman to ride. He faces some tough competition in his bid for the 2015 NE Manion Cup, including from four other single figure hopefuls:

  • #1 Bagman ($5) – one of four horses saddled by Chris Waller in the race, Bagman will carry the lone topweight of 59kg as he jumps from barrier five with James McDonald as jockey. The eight-year-old gelding enjoyed back-to-back handicap wins last August before scoring a minor placing in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m). However, Bagman has failed to place in any of his three starts this campaign.
  • #10 Sasenkile ($5.50) – the Tony McEvoy-trained gelding will carry the minimum weight of 54kg as he jumps from barrier four with Serg Lisnyy to ride. Sasenkile has finished in the first three in all four of his past starts, including back-to-back wins in a Benchmark 85 and 83, one of which was over 2400 metres.
  • #4 Diametric ($9) – Waller’s second runner in the NE Manion Cup is six-year-old Diametric, who will jump from barrier six with Damien Oliver. He enjoyed a minor placing in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) on February 21.
  • #9 Grand Marshal ($9) – rounding out the single figure betting is Waller’s third of four horses in the race, who will have to overcome a wide start from the outside gate with Jim Cassidy to ride. The five-year-old gelding has failed to place in any of his three starts this campaign but has finished in the first two in his two previous starts over 2400 metres.
