The Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) is the feature race running at Rosehill this Saturday; considering there are a total of five Group One races running across the day this is quite an accomplishment.
A capacity field of 16 runners plus three emergencies feature in the field for the $3.5 million juvenile race; however just two of the runners are offering single figure odds, which means it can be difficult to know where to put your money. The upside of course is that you have the chance to back the winner at a highly lucrative price.
Headlining the Golden Slipper betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver at $3.10. The colt is one of three horses saddled by Waterhouse in the race as she vies for her sixth consecutive victory in the race. While still the favourite, Vancouver has continued to drift from his opening price of $2.50 after drawing a wide starting gate.
The only other single figure hopeful is Exosphere at $4. The John O’Shea-trained colt is also the market mover of the field, seeing his price continually shorten from $4.60. Exosphere is one of four Godolphin juveniles in the Golden Slipper, enjoying a four length victory in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) on February 28.

#3 Furnaces ($14)
One of four John O’Shea-trained, Godolphin-bred horses in the Slipper field, two-year-old colt Furnaces will get the coveted inside run from barrier one. Barrier one has been the most successful starting gate in the race since 1957, providing nine winners including three of the last six. So it’s hard to look past Furnaces, considering his lucrative odds. Furances won his maiden back in October and has finished runner-up in both of his starts this campaign, running second to Haptic in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on February 14 and again to Vancouver in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 7. It’s not hard to imagine the colt breaking through to win the Golden Slipper on Saturday.
#1 Vancouver ($3.10)
Gai Waterhouse’s Vancouver has sat atop the Golden Slipper betting ever since his dominant three and a quarter length victory in the Todman Stakes on March 7. However the colt suffered a blow when he drew a wide start from barrier 18, yet he’ll come into gate 15 if the first two emergencies fail to make the field. Only one Golden Slipper winner has won from gate 15 in the past 32 years, Star Watch back in 1988. Yet in a twist of fate, the horse was trained by Waterhouse’s father TJ Smith. It would be great for Waterhouse to follow in her father’s footsteps on the same day she tries to equal his record for total wins in the race yet Vancouver has never had to start a race in a gate wider than five, so only time will tell.
#9 Reemah ($41)
Rounding out our Golden Slipper tips is the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Reemah, offering punters a potentially huge payout with a win price of $41 or $9 to place. Reemah has seen a big drift in the betting market from her opening price of $26, which could be due to her wide start from barrier 15 (but will potentially come into gate 12). It’s worth noting however that Reemah overcame a wide start from barrier 12 (of 14) to run a very close second in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 28 with a starting price of $101. Hayes & Dabernig have had recent success with roughies and the Golden Slipper could be another case of that.
