You may have gotten yourself wrapped up in the five Group One races running at Rosehill this Saturday but don’t forget there’s also an impressive meeting at Bendigo on the same day, the feature race of which is the Listed Golden Mile (1600m).
A capacity field of 16 runners is set to tackle the $150,000 race, three of which are offering single figure odds in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Sharing the $4.80 favouritism are David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Stipulate and the Ciaron Maher-trained Akavoroun.
Six-year-old gelding Stipulate is making his debut at Bendigo but has placed in six of his 12 starts over a mile – it’s worth noting he’s yet to win over the trip. The UK import arrived in Australia in November 2013, winning his maiden down under in the Listed Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock Stakes (1700m) in August last year.
Stipulate found a lovely spot one off the fence and was allowed to work his way into the race without pressure before winding up and powering away in a very nice one and three-quarter length win. However, the gelding has failed to place in any of his five subsequent starts, four of which were at the highest level of racing.
His trainers are hopeful that a step down in class will see the gelding return to the winner’s circle. An inside jump from barrier two with Mark Zahra to ride should help him do just that.
Akavoroun will jump from barrier seven with Michelle Payne as jockey. The five-year-old gelding has finished first two in seven of his 13 career starts, one of which was over a mile and one that was at Bendigo.
The gelding won a Benchmark 78 over 1400 metres at Bendigo in May last year before ending his campaign with a win in the Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m) on July 12. However he has failed to even place in any of his six subsequent starts.
The third and final single figure hopeful in the 2015 Golden Mile betting is Dylanson ($7.50). The Phillip Stokes-trained gelding will enjoy a start from barrier three with jockey Clare Lindop, carrying the minimum weight of 54kg.
Dylanson has won two of his four starts over a mile, including the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) at Morphettville last time out on March 9, which was on the back of two placings at the same track.
Other horses due to run in the Golden Mile include Group 1 winner Puccini ($13), who will carry the hefty topweight of 60kg, Guest Of Honour ($13), Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) winner Gris Caro ($16), and Mick Price’s Count Of Limonade ($26).
