Small Field for 2015 Ranvet Stakes

Just seven of the ten nominated horses for the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) featured in the final field released this morning (Wednesday), which means it’ll be a small yet classy field contesting the race this Saturday at Rosehill.

Headlining the field is John O’Shea’s Contributer, who will jump from barrier five with James McDonald to ride.

The five-year-old horse made his Australian debut in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) on October 18, which he won by one length. He then tackled the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 8 but couldn’t gain the necessary speed over a mile, finishing midfield in eighth.

Contributer resumed in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 14 following a ten week spell, flashing home to beat his rivals easily, winning by one and a half lengths. He then tackled the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) two weeks later, for which he was the $2.50 favourite.

The horse settled nicely in sixth place, one off the rails, before moving up well nearing the home turn. He hit the front with 100 metres to go and fought on gamely to score his first Group One race by half a length.

Japanese four-year-old horse Tosen Stardom will kick off his Sydney autumn racing carnival campaign in the 2015 Ranvet Stakes, scoring the inside jump from barrier one with Tommy Berry to ride. The Yasutoshi Ikee-trained horse has won half of his eight career starts, including the Group 3 Challenge Cup (1800m) back on December 13.

The 2015 Ranvet Stakes will be Tosen Stardom’s first race in three months since he has been in quarantine in both Japan and Australia before enjoying preparation work at Canterbury.

Barrier one and three are the most successful gates for the Ranvet Stakes since 1983, bringing home six winners each. John Moore’s Dominant will jump from barrier three with Damien Oliver to ride.

Dominant has been racing in Hong Kong lately, finishing third in the Listed Centenary Vase (1800m) on February 7.

Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller will saddle He’s Your Man in the 2015 Ranvet Stakes. The six-year-old gelding won the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) back in October followed by a very fast finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on November 1.

He’s Your Man resumed for a midfield run in Apollo Stakes, finishing less than three lengths behind winner Contributer, and earned a minor placing in the Chipping Norton. The pair will face off for the third consecutive time this campaign.

Roger JamesSilent Achiever and Kris LeesLucia Valentina will carry 57kg as they take on the boys in the Ranvet Stakes.

Six-year-old mare Silent Achiever is the defending champion of the race, winning a short half-head from Carlton House last year, which was part of a Group One treble for the mare. However she has failed to return to the winner’s circle in any of her seven subsequent starts.

Lucia Valentina is a two-time winner over 2000 metres, including the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes back in October. She will enjoy the return to the trip after running at less than a mile her first two starts this campaign.
