Sacred Falls Headlines 2015 George Ryder Stakes Field

The Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) is one of five races at the highest level running at Rosehill this Saturday. It will perhaps be the race to watch of the day, attracting a high-class field of 14 sprint-mile runners.

Chris Waller has a monopoly on the race, accepting with six of his seven nominated horses. Leading the field is his five-year-old horse Sacred Falls, who won the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) back in September. Sacred Falls resumed in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 7, finishing outside the placings in fifth. The horse will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 13 with Jim Cassidy to ride.

Waller’s five other runners in the 2015 George Ryder Stakes field are Moriarty, Weary, I’m Imposing, Royal Descent, and Kermadec.

Seven-year-old Moriarty enjoyed a trip to Perth during the summer racing carnival, running third in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) on November 22 before winning the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in a tight finish with Disposition. The gelding will resume in the George Ryder, jumping from barrier 10 with Glen Boss.

I’m Imposing will also be resuming in Saturday’s race with the nine-year-old last seen winning the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) on December 26, on the back of a runner-up finish in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 13. The gelding will have to overcome a wide start from the outside gate.

Waller’s fit runners in the race include Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) winner Weary, who has already had three starts this campaign, five-year-old mare Royal Descent, who will jump from the most successful barrier (6), and Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) third placegetter Kermadec.

Gai Waterhouse will saddle four-year-old mare Cosmic Endeavour, who has enjoyed a successful three-start campaign so far that saw the mare run second in the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) before winning the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 7, half a length from speedy grey mare Catkins. Cosmic Endeavour will jump from barrier four with Tommy Berry.

Also coming via the Canterbury Stakes is David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Criterion, who earned a minor placing in the race. The four-year-old horse hasn’t won a race since the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) this time last year but has placed in five of his eight subsequent starts.

Criterion will jump from barrier five with Craig Williams.

Barrier one has delivered six George Ryder Stakes winners in the past 32 years and John Thompson’s Hooked will enjoy the inside jump this year. The four-year-old horse enjoyed success during the spring, winning the Group 3 Cameron Stakes (1500m) over the same trip, winning the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m), and placing in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

The horse resumed in the Canterbury Stakes two weeks ago, running just shy of the first three in fourth place.

Three-year-old colt Shooting To Win will enjoy an ideal jump from barrier three with Blake Shinn to ride as he takes on his older rivals.
