Rising Romance Leads 2015 Epona Stakes Field

The Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) is one of nine black-type races running at Rosehill this Saturday, attracting a field of 11 fillies and mares.

Headlining the field is the Donna Logan-trained Rising Romance, who has been given a great advantage after drawing barrier two with James McDonald to ride.

Rising Romance enjoyed a successful spring campaign that saw her finish runner-up in the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) on October 4 and again in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) two weeks later. The four-year-old mare was very fast out of barrier 14 to cross the field and lead. She kept pinching inside runs when others got off the fence, hitting the lead around the bend and going for home in a strong effort. She was only run down by Admire Rakti in the last few strides.

The mare resumed her campaign at Ellerslie on February 14, winning a handicap over 1500 metres, before running second in the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) on March 7, in which she was only just out bobbed by Sakhee’s Soldier.

Rising Romance will need to win the 2015 Epona Stakes if she has any hopes of figuring in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) or Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 11.

The Joseph Pride-trained Adorabeel will enjoy the inside run from barrier one with Sam Clipperton to ride.

The five-year-old mare stepped up to black-type racing on March 7, winning the Group 3 Aspiration Quality (1600m).

Chris Waller will deliver a dual-pronged attack in the Epona Stakes, saddling Intimate Moment and Telepathic.

Five-year-old mare Intimate Moment ran third to Adorabeel in the Aspiration Quality and will start in barrier 10 with Kerrin McEvoy to ride while four-year-old Telepathic was a short half head away in fourth place in the same race, set to jump from barrier five with Glen Boss.

Other fillies and mares set to run in the 2015 Epona Stakes include Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) runner-up Oriental Lady, Aspirations Quality runner-up Entertains, and Gai Waterhouse’s Role Model.
