While a new batch of promising two-year-olds will contest the $3.5 million feature race this Saturday, Mossfun will run in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) worth just $150,000.

Mossfun missed out on a spring campaign after the filly was struck down with a virus in late August which meant she was spelled for ten months following her Golden Slipper victory. The filly resumed in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) on February 14 but ran a disappointing sixth, three lengths behind winner Adrift. She couldn’t do any better in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) on March 7, finishing four lengths behind Miracles Of Life in sixth place again.

As a result her trainers have opted to take a step back in class with Mossfun. The filly will carry the topweight of 58kg with Tommy Berry to ride however she will have to overcome a wide start from the outside gate (10).

A total of 11 fillies and mares featured in the 2015 Birthday Card Stakes field that was released this morning yet Ciaron Maher has already scratched Chloe in Paris since she made it into the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) field as second emergency.

Kris Lees will deliver a dual-pronged attack on the race with Fine Bubbles and Brook Road.

Five-year-old mare Fine Bubbles will enjoy a jump from barrier four with Jim Cassidy while Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m) winner Brook Road will jump from barrier eight with champion hoop James McDonald.

Clinton McDonald’s Tahni Dancer will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one, however Chad Schofield has taken over jockey duties from usual rider Glen Boss.

Tahni Dancer enjoyed minor success during the spring, running second in both the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m).

Other classy fillies and mares set to run in the Birthday Card Stakes this Saturday include Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) minor placer and Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) runner Atmospherical, David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Tawteen, and Gerald Ryan’s Ygritte, who will jump from barrier two with Brenton Avdulla.
