Java Headlines 2015 Bendigo Guineas Capacity Field

The Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) is one of two feature races running in Melbourne this Saturday, attracting a capacity field of 16 runners plus four emergencies.

Headlining the field is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Java, who will have his first start since running fourth in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) on February 14.

The three-year-old gelding broke his four-game winning streak in the feature race at Caulfield, in which he finished three and a half lengths behind winner Dissident. Java raced outside the leader and challenged strongly with 300m to go but weakened a little on that effort from the final 100m.

Java drew barrier 13 for the race but will come one gate in if the second emergency Lucques fails to make the field.

Speaking to Racing Ahead before this morning’s barrier draw, co-trainer Lee Freedman revealed he was confident a freshen-up would help Java return to the winner’s circle in the 2015 Bendigo Guineas; he was hopeful of an inside draw so they gelding could get a good spot up front in the leading pack but remains optimistic.

“He’s five weeks since he ran in the Orr, but he had a bit of solid racing leading up to the Orr,” Freedman said.

“He’s had a few weeks off and we’ve got him back to the mark again, so he should be very competitive in it.

“He likes to race in the first three or four and that’s his advantage, he can race there and kick as well so it’s a nice race for him.”

Java won his maiden at Kilmore on December 2 along with two Benchmark 64s within the next month. He stepped up to black-type racing for the first time January 26, winning the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1300m). The gelding worked over to settle outside the leader before ranging up to him entering the straight. He hit the front with 200m to go and toughed it out well to hold of his rivals, winning by one and a quarter length.

The 2015 Bendigo Guineas will also see the likes of Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) runner Chivalry, Vobis Gold Carat (1200m) winner Fast Cash, Darren Weir’s Profit Share, Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) winner Written Dash, and David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Jurasound run.
