Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A capacity field of 14 sprinters plus three emergencies features in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) field, which was released this morning (Wednesday).
The Galaxy is one of five Group One races running at Rosehill this Saturday, offering $400,000 in total prize money.
Headlining the field is defending champion Tiger Tees, who has drawn barrier nine but will come into barrier seven if the first two emergencies fail to earn a place in the race. Tiger Tees’ trainer Joseph Pride will surely be hoping this happens as barrier seven is the most successful starting gate in the race’s history with five winners.
Tiger Tees needs all the luck he can get after the seven-year-old gelding ran last in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) first-up. The gelding jumped well and rolled across from his outside barrier to be second, one length off the outside lead. He was niggled at on entering the straight and under extreme pressure approaching the 300 metres. He quickly shuffled back through the field thereafter, finishing eight lengths off winner Cosmic Endeavour.
The gelding enjoyed a short yet successful spring campaign that saw him win both the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) and Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) before running second in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m). Pride is hopeful he can reclaim this form when he defends his title in the 2015 Galaxy.
Pride has also accepted with three-year-old colt Kuro, who is the third emergency of the race. Kuro has placed in seven of his nine career starts and was last seen running third in the Listed Fireball Quality (1100m) on March 7.
Peter Moody will also deliver a dual-pronged attack on the race with both Flamberge and A Time For Julia featuring in the final field.
Five-year-old gelding Flamberge has placed in all three of his past starts, including a nice run in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) on February 14, in which he was only nabbed by speedy Chautauqua in the closing moments. He is set to jump from barrier 13 (into 10) with champion hoop Damien Oliver.
A Time For Julia rounds out the field and will carry the minimum weight of 52kg as she ideally jumps from barrier three with Glen Boss in the saddle.
The five-year-old mare was a two-time runner-up in the spring but failed to make anything of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up on February 28.
Peter Snowden was happy with the 55.5kg weight allocated to his runner Miracles Of Life after she won the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) two weeks ago, however he will be less happy about her wide draw in barrier 14.
Deep Field will have to overcome a wide start from the outside gate. The Team Hawkes-trained horse finished third to Lankan Rupee and Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up, which has helped his form hold up, but he was nabbed by Target In Sight in the easier Group 3 Mauren McCarten Stakes (1100m) last Saturday.
Other 2015 The Galaxy runners include Les Bridge’s Avoid Lightning, Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) winner Rubick, who will jump from barrier four with Kerrin McEvoy, Oakleigh Plate minor placer Fast ‘N’ Rocking, and Chris Waller’s Heart Testa, who won the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) on February 14.
